The grandest square in Samarkand. I didn’t like the idea that you had to pay to go in. Of course you can walk around the perimeter and photograph the exterior. One day it was sunny and the next day it was snowy, so had very different pictures. At night 7pm there is a light show in the Registan for about 50 min and it’s ticketed.

This ensemble of majestic, tilting medressas – a near-overload of majolica, azure mosaics and vast, well-proportioned spaces – is the centrepiece of the city, and arguably the most awesome single sight in Central Asia. The three grand edifices here are among the world’s oldest preserved medressas, anything older having been destroyed by Chinggis Khan.

Stunning colourful night light show that shouldn't be missed, as well as visiting the three schools buildings at day time

Definitely one of the best spot in Uzbek, worth the entrance fee and wait foe the light show at 7pm.

If you want to save the entrance fee its as nice to see it from outside the gate too

The number place to visit in Samarkand - the Registon. The place is huge- allow yourself 3-4 hours if you want to deeply appreciate the place and its history.

Tour guide and audio guide are available at the gate. The ticket is 65,000 Som per person. The place was a school before and now the classrooms, professors’ office were turned into souvenir shops.

I like the tone there! Unfortunately because of Macron we couldn’t come inside the mosque, so I could only take the video of it.
If you need content for your blog, there are many beautiful places for it there.

Don’t miss free “excursion” in several shops about Uzbekistan ceramics. It was interesting!

In gardens you can listen to live traditional music

Try to visit Registan late evening to see the show if someone paid it :)

The most important tourist attraction in the city of Samarkand, the buildings are a witness to the great scientific status of the city and its scientists throughout the ages, and the beauty of the buildings continues even in the evening with light shows every day at eight-thirty.

Registan Square is a real dessert for a magic dinner table. My advice to you is this - visit other historical monuments during the day. And when the sun goes down, dessert for your eyes and soul will be ready. Try not to go to the square directly, but look for another way in the dark near walls. And then, suddenly, an amazing beauty will flash in front of your eyes.

I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful place and was lucky enough to watch the extended light show showcasing Uzbekistan's rich history & culture albeit in their local language so couldn't understand a thing 🫣😂.

The must see place of Samarkand , do not miss exploring all 3 mussolems, amazing place steeped in rich history. Do not miss the Zoroastrian twist in one of the blocks ...The interiors laden with gold makes your jaw drop. Dress modestly and cover the head while entering inside. I wish I had more time to spend here. Do not miss a photo op with the tourist police. Locals may also ask you for photos.

This place is just mind blowing!! Definitely a must to visit in Samarkand. I came there 4 times, because this place is just stunning. Make sure to come early around 8am so that the whole place will be empty. Apart from it, every day at 9pm there a light show, which is worth seeing as well. It’s for free the show

Very beautiful and such a huge place. Lights up after 6 pm. The view is very beautiful during the evenings.

History

The three madrasahs of the Registan are the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636), and the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660). Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning school.

Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420)
edit
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah, built by Ulugh Beg during the Timurid Empire era of Timur, has an imposing iwan with a lancet-arch pishtaq or portal facing the square. The corners are flanked by high minarets. The mosaic panel over the iwan's entrance arch is decorated by geometrical stylized ornaments. The square courtyard includes a mosque and lecture rooms, and is fringed by the dormitory cells in which students lived. There are deep galleries along the axes. Originally the Ulugh Beg Madrasah was a two-storied building with four domed darskhonas (lecture rooms) at the corners.

The Ulugh Beg Madrasah
It was one of the best clergy universities of the Muslim Orient in the 15th century CE. Abdul-Rahman Jami, the great Persian poet, scholar, mystic, scientist and philosopher studied at the madrasah.[1] Ulugh Beg himself gave lectures there. During Ulugh Beg's government the madrasah was a centre of learning.

Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636)
edit
In the 17th century the ruler of Samarkand, Yalangtush Bakhodur, ordered the construction of the Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori madrasahs. The tiger mosaics with a rising sun on their back are especially interesting for their depiction of living beings and use of Persian motifs.

Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660)
edit
Ten years later the Tilya-Kori Madrasah was built. It was not only a residential college for students, but also played the role of grand masjid (mosque). It has a two-storied main facade and a vast courtyard fringed by dormitory cells, with four galleries along the axes. The mosque building (see picture) is situated in the western section of the courtyard. The main hall of the mosque is abundantly gilded.

I love it, for three days in a raw I was coming and taking photos. I have no word to describe how beautiful it is. Colours, space on the middle. Architecture, history. I just hate those merchandisers that are so pushy and seriously some of them are so agresive. I got quite upset because I know exactly what I want and need to buy so please let me enjoy especially that I paid to enter.
This was the place of education, try selling people books or art, something about Registan Samarkand not silly things!

A very beautiful place and a must if you’re visiting Uzbekistan and of course Samarkand.

We were lucky to catch the laser show which was about the development of human civilisations starting from the old Egyptians, passing by other important civilisations like Indians, the Greeks, Romans, up to nowadays. The show ran for 20 mins or so. I’m not sure about the timings of it but it was really beautiful so try to ask about it.

The place is like an old university where you can feel and see some of the important era in human civilisation. And it has lots of shops inside for souvenirs and gifts.

It's the best place to visit in Samarkand. Should be visited during day time to visit the interior of the three structures, Ulughbek, Sher- Dor and Tilla-Kori Madrassah. It's truly beautiful from inside as well as outside. Though most of it is used as shops now. Must not miss the light and sound show in the evening. The entire complex gets transformed with colorful lights and background music. It's undoubtedly the best experience in Uzbekistan.

No proper information about the light show timings. We were told it'll start at 8pm, it started finally at 8:45pm and lasted for 16 min. This was on Sunday, and the show was a story about the history of samarkand from ancient times till modern era. On Monday, the show started at 8:30pm, but it was different. Just different colors displayed to the tune of various songs, and it went on for more than 30 min.

It is place worth visiting in night for the musical performance with local touch of samarkand. In day time we can visit inside of the 3 madrasas to see the beautiful architecture and buy souvenirs. Absolutely nice place to visit if your an introvert because i personally felt samarkand is a place where you can find peace and calm.
