I love this sacred place. To see a small stone Buddhist Pagoda on the top of very tall mountain shining in the sunlight and during majestic green of thousands mountains around is something you never forget. I love to walk through and climb up well maintained paths which are paved with selected stones and lots of trees along the roads. I would love to visit again this place.

Highly recommended trek, but don't miss the steps unless you want to relive the original monks' path up (!).

Our family loves the Legacy Yen Tu right at the base of the hill.

Considered as "the ancestral land of Buddhism". An even more interesting thing is the dividing line between Quang Ninh and Bac Giang provinces. If the East belongs to Quang Ninh province, the West of this pagoda belongs to Bac Giang province.
If you don't mind crowds, and want to participate in interesting activities at the temple, you can go from January 10 to March of the lunar calendar. This is the time of the Yen Tu Spring Festival, so there are quite a few tourists from all over the world to visit.
Roadside restaurants have affordable and acceptable prices
You might consider staying at Legacy Resort Yen Tu

Although they have 2 cable cars, but we still need to walk and climb more 1000 metres. You should search the weather before your trip

This pergoda is only 3 hours away from Hanoi so a perfect day trip. Allow 3-4 hours looking around and be prepared to walk up a lot of steps. Fitness and good shoes are the key. There are 2 cable cars to reach the top for a cost of 390,000 VND. You'll need to do this to get to the top. Well worth it.

Such beautiful place to visit. With foreigners, you should avoid to travel here from Feb to Apr, because its so crowded.

January: We had our homestay at the base of the mountain. Great place!
The road towards the mountain feels like you're walking through a small village. Plenty of nice small shops. But I wouldn't go shopping until you climbed the mountain.

Because I hurt my ankle the other day very badly. And since we had a 5 year old with us. We went by cablecars.
You'll be brought to the first one by trolleybus if you wish to. Then go up the first cablecar. Great view, of course.
After that first part you'll have to walk up and down a lot of stairs before you can rest a bit. There are some shops along the road towards the next cablecar. But expect to walk stairs and cobblestones, a lot!
The next cablecar will you get you much higher.
After that the road becomes more dangerous. Only a few stairlike stones. After that it's more like a mix between large and small stones to climb up.

At the very top, where we stopped our climb, kinda. In January people still had Tết holiday, so it was packed with people at the top.
It was getting way too dangerous for our kid and for me with the bruised ankle. The last part is more climbing over steep large stones. To the top. But when we were at that part the line wasn't moving at all. People squeezing between our group to get to the top, pushing everyone away. Even older people, who really should know better. Really crazy.
To get down we still had to snake our way through the pack to get to the stepping stones downwards.
Getting down was pretty easy. No real challenges. Not even for our 5 year old.

The view is amazing. My afraid of heights kept kicking in though. So I only took a couple of peeks.

Beautiful views from the hike up the mountain. There’s a bronze Buddha at the half way point and a bronze pagoda at the summit There are two segments of cable cars to ease the mountain climb, but still expect a four hour hike

Yên Tử mountain with the bronze pagoda at the top is a must for Vietnamese and foreigners to watch great views, and have pleasure to travel up and down by cable car, especially have good health to reach the pagoda. I love Yên Tử so much.

Spot on view when reaching the peak, only to be ruined by a stray of clouds a few minutes later. There's a pagoda near the bottom of the peak and multiple rest stops every 20 minutes or so on the hike. Hike was well worth it none of the less, probably the best alternative to Fansipan (Phan xi phang) in North Vietnam but less well known. There is also a nice pagoda near the cable car rides and multiple rest areas near them too. Be prepared, there are still many steps to conquer before reaching the next rest stops.
