I visited on March 28, 2019; It's amazing! beautiful ancient building I've never seen something like that before. It's great, many nice spaces, doors and windows from 700 years ago. There are some guides to ask from around the place. It's worth seeing and think about the life style of emperors and kings in the past. There is also the national museum inside the citadel that should be separately paid to watch and another separate payment to take photos.

A great Place for Visting on Holidays, For Foreigners

Historical place with cheap ticket. Very well organised . Explains from skander time to Islamic revolution. There was /is an exhibition too.

Visiting Herat Citadel is one of the musts. The historical architecture and combination of building materials are unique. Inside the Citadel, you will visit a museum of historical elements. There, in Herat you find kind hearts and hospitality among the citizens. Most of the times there are festivals held inside the Citadel which will make visiting there more exciting with life cultural and local musics. I was so lucky that I visit here in such a day and night. 🍀❤

After several earthquakes in Herat province in the last two weeks Herat citadel cracked different parts and damage seriously. So it needs the world's attention especially the UNESCO for rehabilitation of the cracked parts.

Really cool place. Lots of history. Recently renovated. It was closed when I went, but we were able to bribe the workers to let us in. Also, don't miss out on seeing the camel-powered oil mill in the basement!!! It is kind of hidden, so walk around the exterior of the citadel until you find it! So so cool.

Wonderful and historic citadel dates back to great Alexander (330 BC) everything is well restored and probably the most clean monument in Afghanistan

This place is another architectural beauty. If somebody likes history then this is a must. You have national museum of herat as well here.
Though it's open everyday, but do check up with local guide before visiting. Wonderfully rebuilt and restored building of all times

This Citadel got a lot of structural damage from the October 2023 earthquake. Sections are closed off for renovations.

The majestic Herat fort was built during the Alexandrian era.
The citadel is still in visibly good condition.
Thanks to the local government authorities.
Summers could be very harsh here in the outdoors of the citadel.
But winters are snowy.
A good place to visit for the history lover's. The best time to visit is Monday's.
Tickets are cheap.

The history of this place as you see in the picture dates back to 330 BC. It is well-known as Herat Citadel or Citadel of alexander . local people call it qala iIktyaruddin which is at the center of herat . this place was exactly the place where alexander the great and his army settled when they Arrived to Afghanistan after the battle of Gaugamela
