Howitt Hut

Remote Alpine wilderness. Flat soft grass for cosy tent set ups, fire pits, drop toilet and large water tank. The road in is dirt and has many holes...Sedan can drive in but would have to take their very merry time. Many beautiful walking tracks, water falls and small streams. Must be experienced hikers. Be prepared for all weather conditions, we had both wind, rain and shine on all three nights, 4 days we spent in the area.. (March 2021).

A beautiful and interesting area of history located in the amazing Howitt plains (believe it or not). The camp area provides a nice park style seating area with a wooden table and chairs.
Inside the hut there are a number of readings regarding the history of the hut and even the various murders that occurred there. Theres also a sturdy snow shovel provided for public use and the fireplace is still actively used. No firewood provided so bring your own if you feel like staying warm.
Plenty of space for parking and theres an alpine stream about 3 minutes walk away thats nice and cold. i would know, i fell into it 😅.

There are a few small and very specific areas of cellular reception so don’t expect to be able to make any calls. But make sure you take some photos! Very much worth the stop if you have the time.

Another high country hut which tells a story of its own. It's been well maintained and has a drop toilet nearby with a water tank for emergency water. Plenty of area around the site for camping.

Wonderful place, clean drop dunny, water for horses, would need to boil for humans....good walks.

Gr8 hut hut. 1 u can sleep in if u need. For some reason there were HEAPS of flies there when we visited but very few flies elsewhere

Love the high country and everything in it

The Victorian High Country is synonymous with cattleman’s huts and Howitt Hut is one of many within the High Country. Rich in history as part of the Wonnangatta Murders over 100 years ago. Excellent camp area with a drop dunny. These days it’s accessible by two wheel drive in the summer months.

If you pick the right time year and weekend you'll be lucky to visit here in the snow while the road remains open, good little spot, a tad windy, good for anyone caught out in bad weather
