In de Vrede

Been a regular visitor since years. But this was the first time we had a proper meal/ lunch. Tried several dishes and loved each one. Fish and chips 4/5, gratineerde visschotel 5/5, baked ribs 5/5, steak 5/5, spaghetti bolognaise 4/5. Prices on the higher side but hey it’s West Vleteren ;)

On a side note, one can buy cartons of beer from the store in the restaurant, Max 3 boxes per person. 6bottles / box

Beautiful spot to relax after a nice walk, and of course to enjoy a Westvleteren beer. Nice selection of food, we shared a plate of meat and cheeses.

Contrary to popular belief and many beery blogs, the Westvleteren beers are not on tap. They are served in the bottle.

There were no blondes available in the shop on our last visit, which was a little disappointing.

The pâté served on bread with salad is my usual order here, accompanied by and Westy 12, naturally, and it was very enjoyable, as always!!

But then, my opinion may be a little biased. I feel Charlie, in the chocolate factory!!

Great place to enjoy a wonderful beer. The patio is nice with plenty of tables. The food all looked good - we had the beer board and it went well with our drinks. The gift shop inside has various items for sale along with beer to go in packs of 6. The current limit is three packs of 6 per person.

Great place with great food, fast and friendly service and a very good atmosphere. The menu contains several items that are being prepared with beer and/or cheese made by the local monks of the West-Vleteren abbey. The place can get very busy on weekend and holidays but even then service is fast and good. One can buy the beer and the cheese as well as several other local products in the gift shop. Easy parking.

What a place!! Obviously exceptional since it’s the only place (almost) where you can buy Westvleteren, but the atmosphere is quite amazing too. You know that everyone in that place is there to enjoy one of the best beer in this world, everyone is there to enjoy themselves and you can see that everyone has a glimmer in their eyes, they’re filled with amazement and the overall atmosphere oozes with positive vibes.

We tried the blond, 8 and 12 and also ordered a plate of cheese, bitterballen, burger and I tried the In de Vrede coupe.

The beers are ok, not in the sense that they’re bad, but in comparison to a well 2y aged Westvleteren, they aren’t as good since they’re served young. That’s a bit of a disappointment if you had the aged beer, but it’s still a good beer.

The food was nice but also basic. The platter of cheese goes well with the beer, the bitterballen were way better than any I’ve had in Amsterdam and the burger was fine. The In de Vrede coupe was a special desert and something I would definitely consider a must try. It has a peculiar taste and a nice creation.

The shop also sells amazing products. I would highly recommend to buy the Belval cheese. They don’t always have it, but if they do, don’t miss it. It goes perfectly with the Westvleteren.

Simply the best. Excellent food and of course superb beers. There is a Blonde, a Dubbel (8), and a Quad (12). The Blonde is good, the Dubbel is really one of the best, and the Quad is pretty much definitely the best of the best. Very friendly and helpful staff. This place is in the middle of nowhere, but it is 100% worth the pilgrimage for any Belgian beer lover. Do it, you won't be sorry.

Plenty of Westvlateren beer for purchase - they did not appear to be in danger of running out even with the steady customer flow.

If you made it this far, enjoy a meal. And, you can sample the beer!

Good food, including Abbey cheeses, but the Coupe "In de Vrede" ice cream steals the show. Almost justifies the visit all by itself.

This is one of the best beers in the world! The 12 is amazing! Laid back environment, super quick service, even when the house is busy. A friendly staff will serve you their 3 great beers (produced right across the street), which you can also buy at their gift shop. Do not buy after eating there, rather buy your beers to take home as soon as you get there! Because sometimes they run out and you cannot take bottles with you, which can be frustrating. Also, try their pie with whipped cream and ice cream! It's amazing! Certainly worth the visit

The food was delicious (try the Belgian steak), the waiters were very friendly, and yes, the beer was available. Along with the restaurant, the gift shop adjacent to it is where you can buy 6 pack bottled beers. Some types can be out of stock for quite some time,but nevertheless,you can easily buy this rare beer without going into the hassle of booking online,and waiting in line to receive the goods

Every trip to Belgium. I make the drive to In de Vrede. Each day they have a limited about of Westvleteren six packs. Best price you will find unless you live close by and register for the monthly pick up. The restaurant sells all three types of Westvletern beers (12, 8, and the Blonde). Recommend you try all three but you may need a designated driver afterwards. The ice cream made with the beer is unbelievably good. Also all the food I have tried on the menu has been delicious. Highly recommended and worth the drive if you are coming from Brussels. Please note this is outside the monastery and they do not allow visitors inside the brewery. Buy beer at the gift shop and they have shirts, glasses, and a whole bunch more gifts.

Came here as a beer pilgrim, I think it’s worth it. The beer has so much hype that it is hard to judge objectively, but it was a great beer unlike anything offered from the other Trappist brewers. The service at the cafe is a little slow (even by EU standards), but friendly and helpful. We were able to pick up some 6 packs (€22.50) in the souvenir shop. At midday on a Monday, it was about 70% retirees and 30% beer pilgrims. The 12 is strong and after a couple over w hours I was feeling pretty toasty. Worth the trip for any beer lover, and even for interested tourists who want to try a very unique and exclusive beer. The case and abbey are located in the beautiful countryside of Belgium, surrounded by farmland.

Where else can one have Westvleteren beer for breakfast! Nice place, amazing beer, decent enough food. Perfect stop while waiting for the appointment time to pick up beer at the abbey and to get some extra bottles, glasses and cheese!

Some of the best and rarest Belgian Trappist beer in the world - that alone warrants the rating. The snacks are okay (the Abbey cheese is good), but the beer ice cream is out of sight - creamy, sweet, slightly estery, and just a little boozy. Service was efficient and courteous, and the views of the Belgian countryside and Abbey grounds are fantastic.

Due to some technical difficulties we weren't able to secure a beer pickup slot at the Westvleteren Abbey before our trip to Bruges. We decided to make the drive anyways to stop at In de Vrede to enjoy a beer and a nice lunch.

This was definitely worth the drive! We got lucky and the cafe had boxes of Westvleteren 12 for sale in the gift shop (limit 18 bottles per customer) and so we left with a trunk full of beer.

The lunch was fantastic with a view of the farmlands. The food was fresh and delicious, we highly recommend the salad and fried cheese balls.

The highlight of the lunch was the "Coupe de Vrede" for dessert. It is a house-made ice cream flavored by cream and Westvleteren 12 beer. It is absolutely delicious, one of my favorite ice creams and a must try!

Nice patio area to have lunch and a couple of Trappist beers. The ice cream, which comes in a beer glass is heavenly 😍

The only place to buy the famous trappist beer! They have a lovely terrace to enjoy with reasonably priced food. The Abbey pate with bread and salad was €9. A recommended stop with fab beer! You can also buy six packs to take away 🥳
