Soul of Africa Museum

An absolutely fascinating experience. If you have any interest in anthropology, African culture and history, voodoo, or just the unusual or macabre, I highly recommend a visit. I went rather spontaneously while on holiday in the area and wasn't sure what to expect, so I just rang the doorbell and hoped for the best. Fortunately I arrived just as a group of three others were about to start the guided tour, so I was able to join them.

My ability to speak German is very limited, but the curator and other visitors were willing to do the tour in English, for which I am very grateful to them all! We were shown many extremely interesting and rare items related to voodoo and the African diaspora, and given many extremely interesting facts and backstories about them. The curator is a captivating person who has great knowledge and personal experience with his subject matter. It is obvious that he cares deeply about Africa and it's people, beliefs and customs.

Definitely bring cash as card payments are not accepted. I found the experience well worth the money. I recommend calling ahead, especially if you are not fluent in German. But most of all I just recommend going! This museum deserves much more space and recognition, a true hidden gem.

I could spend all day here asking Henning Christoph question after question. So many interesting, thought provoking secrets from the Diaspora. Henning's knowledge is extensive and more than likely far beyond what any other Anthropologist and/or Researcher could ever have access to. A must visit Museum that should be locally and state funded for expansion!

The small museum is private collection in 3 rooms but there are a lot to see about African culture .The owner is your guide and he knows a lot to tell you about which is nessecary to realise what you see.Take with you cash to pay (and chocolates for the Gods if you want something from them.)

Really interesting and worthwhile visit. It is important to know that one must make an appointment beforehand, and that only a limited number of visitors can be accomodated at one time. Henning Christophs extensive knowledge of central Africa and its diaspora is amazing, this must not be lost and will benefit greatly from external (national) funding if this jewel of knowledge is to be relocated and saved for all time. All carefully preserved unique objects and materials have been collected during Mr Christophs research and collaboration with local groups and organisations, NOT as a result of 'stealing' perpetrated by so many nations in the past. The stories Mr Christoph tells are personal and of first hand experience. PLEASE VISIT!, I can wholheartedly reccomend the richly illustrated book 'African Secrets', which can be purchased for just 15 euro, which will also support this fantasic museums future.

This museum is one of the best anthropological museum I have visited. I strongly recommend you to visit it and enjoy. It will be very informative for everyone.

Worth visiting and interesting stories

Das Museum besteht aus 3 Räumen mit super vielen Exponaten. Ohne Führung ist man ziemlich aufgeschmissen, daher kann ich jedem nur empfehlen eine Führung zu buchen. Der Inhaber hat tolle Geschichten parat, vieles selbst erlebt und kann souverän auf Fragen antworten und generell spannend erzählen. Eine absolute Empfehlung!

Ein super spannendes Museum.
Relativ klein, aber mit das interessanteste und beste Museum was ich in meinem Leben besucht habe.
Habe vorher schon eine paar Voodoo Dokus gesehen und war, wie gesagt, absolut begeistert.

Ich kann das S.O.A Museum sehr empfehlen.
Es war zusammen mit dem Ägyptischen Museum In Kairo, die interessanteste Ausstellung mit der besten Führung.
Herr Christoph der die Führung selber macht, entführt einen in eine ganz andere Welt, die im verborgenen existiert und nur wenigen zugänglich ist. Wenn man noch mehr über diese Welt erfahren möchte, kann man sich im Museum die passende Literatur kaufen und der Autor ist oftmals Herr Henning Christoph selbst!
Auch die Fotos in den Büchern sind von Henning Christoph selbst fotografiert worden, denn er ist auch ein sehr bekannter Fotograf! Es lohnt sich also sehr hier einmal vorbei zu schauen und den Geschichten aus einer anderen Welt zu lauschen.

Obwohl man das Vierzimmer Apartment, vollgepfropft mit vodou Fetischen zunächst als Kuriositätenkabinett alter Schule abtun möchte, bietet es einen spannenden Einblick, in eine den meisten Mitteleuropäern unbekannte Welt, abseits abrahamistischer Normen und westlicher Realitätsvorstellungen. Man erschauert und wird an die Brüchigkeit und Subjektivität der eigenen Welt erinnert, während man in eine komplett andere Sphäre hineingezogen wird, die man als Außenseiter nie wirklich verstehen wird, weil sie nur gelebt werden kann.
Die Ausstellung steht und fällt jedoch mit den Erklärungen des Museumsleiters und Kurator, der in zahlreichen Jahren der Reise und Forschung die Sammlung zusammengetragen hat. Die mündliche Erzählung der subjektiven Erfahrung vermittelt so viel mehr als Plakettentexte.
Ein Kleinod, über das sich Essen glücklich schätzen kann.

Ein Besuch im Soul of Africa Museum lohnt sich sehr! Es war total interessant und faszinierend. Wir wurden von Henning Christioph durch das Museum geführt und er hat zu jedem Gegenstand eine unglaubliche Geschichte zu erzählen.
Wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder!

Klein, aber fein! Die Führung ist wirklich sehr anschaulich und informativ. Ich denke vier Personen ist die maximale Anzahl an gleichzeitig möglichen Besuchern. In zwei Jahren steht wohl ein Umzug in größere Räumlichkeiten an, ich hoffe dass die einzigartige Atmosphäre dabei erhalten bleibt.

Einzigartige Sammlung, mit viel Sorgfalt und Leidenschaft gesammelt und kuratiert. Eine Führung ist aber empfohlen, da es wenige Beschriftungen gibt.

Klein, aber sehr interessant, sehr viele Ausstellungsstücke. Auf jeden Fall eine Führung mitmachen, wir erhielten sehr viele Informationen und Geschichten aus erster Hand.

Die Führung war sehr interessant und auch wirklich sehr informativ. Man profitiert hier von den eigenen Erfahrung des Inhabers. Mein bekommt Informationen, die man ansonsten nie in Erfahrung bringen könnte. Die Ausstellung ist dabei mit vielen interessanten Exponaten gespickt und hat einen wirklichen Flair. Zu jedem der Ausstellungsstücke gibt es eine Gesichte und Informationen, die einem bereitwillig zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Der Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, auch wenn man anfangs ein nicht allzu großes Interesse hat, wird es spätestens bei einem Besuch geweckt und man hört gepackt dem Inhaber zu. Es ist eine Erfahrung die man gemacht haben muss und die zur Bildung und Weltverständnis in jedem Fall beiträgt! Sehr zu empfehlen!
