This place was great.t. Food was great. Atmosphere was warm. And of course the Bier was fantastic. They also offer tours of the brewery and of the Keller, 30 meters below ground in the old volcanic flows. I highly recommend.

The Lava Dome is a very good example for a small yet well-devised museum. It is only an hours drive a way from Cologne or Dusseldorf. I definitely recommend buying the combined ticket for museum and cellar tour. For adults the family ticket is €7.80 and for children until 16 it is €6.30. Children shorter than 100cm are free.
Start with the volcano show reel on ground floor (with some 4D effects) and muster roughly an hour for 1st floor. The movie shown made my 6 year old a bit afraid of an imminent eruption, but the display of hands-on science experiments made his mind wander a bit. For tje small ones, there also is a small play area.
Meeting point for the cellar is outside the museum an dit takes a five minute walk to the entrance. The tour guide (German language only) delivers some historic insights and before you climb down the 150 stairs you need to grab a hairnet, helmet and raincoat. Children sizes available. There is also a lift for the physically challenged or the lazy.
The cellar (not a cave! ^^ as it is manmade) is impressive and water is dripping at places. It is part of a huge underground network of cellars and was used to fabricate mill stones and also to store beer crates. It takes about an hour to come full circle. If you are lucky, you can see some bats flying around.
The place is also a regular joint for film crews.
After the tour, you might be ready to have lunch or dinner in one of the breweries close-by.
Recommended for half-a-day out.

We love this museum. It's small but all the interactions are wonderful. Especially the visit of lavakeller, we were very exciting!

Kids friendly, very fun how they did the volcano show. Tour to the lava-dome was impressive too, albeit short and hard to follow the guide (only German guides)

Strangely enough, the local brochures do not explain the highlight of his place which is a guided tour of the ancient lava mines. Very interesting place where people even go and get married. The air is absolutely clean and the temperature down there constantly around 9 degrees.

The history and story of this place are uniquely amazing. What man was capable of accomplishing hundreds of years ago was completely astonishing.

Very interesting place, where you can really understand how fragile is this rock we are living on. And how reach it is. How quick we can go from all to nothing, but disasters.

Nice spacious museum with a lot of information and some interactive parts. The fake news broadcast about "what if the vulcano here erupts" is pretty interesting. The cellars however are the most impressive part.

It was a nice day trip. They provided with helmet, coats etc for protection. The lift is available especially for pregnant women, children and elderly people but can also be used by anyone else. The guide guided is through the whole cellar and gave detailed account of history, geography, geology etc. She also answered the questions competently. But, the setting was to dark, damp and echoing through for my young one. He got uncomfortable and stayed crying after some time.
Parking is big enough.

I found the experience great!!! Well worth the time (1-3 hrs)..

Buy the Combi-ticket and visit the actual lava dome. How many times can you get an opportunity like this in your life?
