Very special museum but very sad that we can't see the real thing. The museum is priced very well. I think the surroundings are free and the real entrance is paid ( see picture). The museum provides you with a 3d experience, dynamic videos and its very informative as everything is also available in English. The parking is totally free and spacious. The surroundings are less impressive unfortunately. Definitely a must visit if you are near.

A stunning and beautiful museum about a fascinating and important site.

The museum itself is broken up into several parts -

The Neocave (the star of the show for me) recreates parts of the original cave, including the occupation areas at the front of the cave and a cavern recreating some of the prehistoric artwork.

Other parts of the museum are dedicated to the prehistory of the area before Altamira, a part dedicated to looking at some of the other Ave and rock art from the area which really help put the site in context.

There are some liveky external walks, including a walk up to the original cave entrance.

My partner is disabled and uses a scooter to get around. He found it very accessible and easy to navigate.

My only major criticism is that they say they have a cafe, but in reality, these are a few vending machines and tables (they do have a separate picnic area). As this museum requires at least 3-4 hours to visit, I would recommend brining a picnic.

For the price of 3 euros a visit this is definitely worth the money and visit.

Nicely documented in several languages. The made an identical replica of the cave inside the museum to not damage the original cave. The tour guide was in Spanish and I don't know if there is also a tour in english or not. It was definitely worth it. In my moment of visiting it was even free in Saturday and Sundays. Check the site first to check if this is still the case.

The best way to see the cave of Altamira in the same conditions as it was before the uncontrolled visits led to its permanent degradation. The reproduction of the cave is very realistic and it's just impressive.

Wonderful place. They did and incredible work recreating the original Altamira paintings even down to the ceiling cracks. Make sure to ask any questions that you might have to the guide. They were all very passionate about the history of the cave and the surrounded ones.

Very impressive. Gives everyone the opportunity to see the cave art. Can understand why you cannot visit the actual caves due to preservation needs. But the recreation of the cave is very good and artefacts on display are very impressive. Well worth a visit

Wonderful recreation of the real caves which are closed to protect the paintings. Fascinating and thoughtful displays. Signage in Spanish and English. It was a totally stunning visit. Took a few hours. Very good value at €3.

Excellent value for money. Very informative displays (some English text) and the recreation of the cave was extraordinary. In the museum at the end there is a video demonstrating how it was constructed. Good little cafeteria and toilet facilities. Lots of outdoor space to wait for entry time.

Really well done recreation of the original cave, beautiful and fascinating. The exhibition exploring palaeolithic life was also excellent. We went on a Sunday morning, when it is free entry, at about 11and only had to wait 30mins for our entry time to the Neocave, there's plenty to look at while you wait.

It's recreating the whole cage experience of Altamira and the drawings are very good! There's a big parking there, which helps, a restaurant with a menu and a beautiful environment to have a walk and see the actual entrance to the real cage. When the reservation times comes you can pass, see a short explaining video and enjoy the cage as much as you want.

My family and I came here on a Sunday, hoping to visit the reproduction of the famous cave of Altamira, one of the most prominent forms of rock art from the Paleolithic age, recognized by Picasso as the mankind's acme of art ...
The entrance tickets on Sundays are free, and so, when we stopped over on our travel from Guipuzcoa to Asturias, we found them all booked out. Anyway, we were able to visit the museum, which was also free, fun and educational! We spent a couple of hours inside, amazed by spear ends, choppers, harpoons, and then by the many forms of rock art and mobile art on display. The visit covers a whole lot of aspects of archeology as a science and of material culture of the Paleolithic man, through videos, little windows, panels, etc etc, that will leave both adults and kids entertained. After the initial letdown of finding out that we had no hope of going in, the visit to the museum itself turned out to be absolutely fascinating. The facilities are well kept, and include bathrooms, a gift shop and a cafeteria (on Sunday, open only to 14.30).

Although you do not view the original Art the re-creation is very well done and insightful. We went first thing in the morning and only waited about 20 minutes to enter the neocave.

I don't have the words to properly explain the incredible work that they have done here. I'm so thankful that they have preserved the real cave of Altamira, yet have created this one of a kind museum to let visitors experience what it would be like in the real thing. Exceptional work has been done here, don't miss it!
