Nice museum

The association is doing a very good job renovating the bunkers !

Take a coat with you because it's cold inside.

First, if you follow the GPS it will make you pass in the forest, very small road and hard to drive.a lot of holes. If I have one advice try to take the highway even if u will pay. But its worth it to do, everybody is nice, its very well kept and fun fact there was no fight in this bunker. A big part of the visit its underground. You can see how they use to live.

Absolutely beautiful visit, it is a great time passer on a very hot day since most of the visit is underground. Count at least 2h, very nice guides explaining the history, and one of the largest underground complex you can actually visit. Obviously the bunkers have been stripped of most of the hardware and it is ww1 technically so not as interesting as a ww2 bunker, but i would definitely recommend a visit if you are into this kind of place.
You can also walk around unattended at your own pace, and Dogs are allowed!

Impressively large. Almost the entire tour takes place underground, so bring a shirt to keep warm. The long tunnels are a sight to behold.

There wasn't an English speaking tour guide available, but they did offer a very good tour aid written in English, and we managed to join a French Tour that had only just started. The areas for exhibit are in remarkable good condition.

BEWARE: the very first steep tunnel you need to take can be VERY SLIPPERY! The tour guide told us this, but without my husband to translate, I would have bowled over the rest of our group behind me. There are plain bricks to either side of the smooth pavers in the middle of the path (this makes sense when you see it), WALK ON THE PLAIN BRICKS! Future slanted tunnels were far less likely to be so treacherous, but it's sound advice for the whole thing as the tunnels often have water leaking in, and we went on a dry, sunny day.

TAKE A SWEATER! It can be quite cold in the tunnels, you'll be going on a subterranean tour! Only a sweater, though, as there is plenty of walking, and as you make your way back towards the exit, you begin to feel quite warm.

DO NOT WANDER OFF! Only 10% of the tunnels have been converted to a public exhibit. The remaining 90% belongs to the ACTIVE MILITARY INSTALLATION on the site! I didn't test those boundaries, but it probably doesn't end well should you find your way to someone working there.

Overall, it's an amazing view of turn of the century innovation. No bunkers had been built like this, and these were the first to employ electricity allowing many capabilities never before dreamed of in the sort.

This state-of-the-art subterranean fortress was a marvel of 1890s engineering: it had electricity, recycled water supplies, generators, powered ventilation, supplies for three months for 7000 troops, and even prototype tanks.

By the time WWI broke out, it was technologically redundant, and was never defended in battle.

It's a fascinating location, well-worth visiting. Check the website for information beforehand, as the site is usually only accessible with a volunteer guide.

Huge pre WWI german fortress, prototype for most WWI and WW2 bunker contructions. Under renovation by local volunteers. Very interesting site.

These fortifications are a brilliant example of German ingenuity. Places at a very strategic position,. The impenetrable bunkers in the Bas-Rhin department of France were built by Germany at the end of the 19th century to defend Strasbourg. The French now keep this heritage in pristine condition and are more than willing tot explain everything,

Had a great time stoping by here after Strasbourg, France. Learned so much about the history of Germany and France in this area. Tour guide made the experience very enjoyable.

Some watch-outs would include checking tour times and their languages before coming. Tours are offered in German and French with one tour a day in English. The tour is also 2.5 hours.

100% worth to be seen and visited, nonetheless an important remark has to be made: there is no text inside in any other language then German and French and the brochure provided at the entrance (available in more language) lacks of clarity and some details due to the poor translation (we got the Italian one), we highly recommend that the organization invests some more in the information. Nice that the volunteers inside were available for answering questions and giving information, sadly only one was able to speak English, so that made our communication a bit harder. All in all I definitely recommend to stop there!!

We visited today and had a fantastic very informative tour, in German. They offer German, English and French tours . It is a nice walk from Mutzig but it takes time so you should find out about the tour times beforehand.

Well worth a visit, but come in time ! We arrived at 3pm and ended the visit at 5:30pm, without wasting time. Great brochure in French describing the fort and its main characteristics'. Beautiful point of view over the valley and hills the fort is overlooking. A big thank to the team and association that is managing this place, and a special thank to the person who talked endlessly with us about the fort, its history, and answering our many questions !

I visited spontaneously Fort Mutzig and surprisingly I was able to join a guided tour. you have to experience the place personally. no pictures or video can leave such a deep impression as the real thing. I was also lucky that a very nice lady with fantastic knowledge easily gave a lot of background information in three languages.

It was an amazing experience to visit the fortress.
The building is in a very good condition and the staff is very nice.
If you want to have an incredible journey, go to the English guided tour by Dorothea.
She explained everything in a very understandable way, was very funny and made the whole tour extremely enjoyable.
I think it is worth the price and the time to visit this place. :)

Very good visit for m'y son as the guide loves the place and shares it well. You'll lose your sense of direction being so deep under the ground. My favorite was the operation room which was just fully renovated. Great work this association does to keep the lessons of history alive.

Our english tour guide Dorothea has done an amazing job, she seems to love the place and that was shown in the way she explained everything and made the whole tour very enjoyable.
