A very nice looking statue near the heart of Bordeux. When we last visited it, it was Christmas time, so we experienced many Christmas markets and people singing in the roads in this area.

It’s free to see this statue, you are not required to pay to see it and its beautiful surroundings.

Free entry, lovely artwork and amazing water fountain. Centrally located, with metro connection to every region of Bordeaux. There are coffee shops, restaurants and other shopping places all located around. A very great tourist attraction site for families and it provides awesome views that meet the tastes of both the old and the young.
You should never visit Bordeaux without visiting the monument for a great experience.

The Monument aux Girondins is a prominent feature in Bordeaux, both for its historical significance and its impressive architectural and artistic elements. The monument stands as a symbol of the city's connection to the turbulent period of the French Revolution.

One of the most impressive monuments you will see. Its size is so much larger than you might imagine, and the detail of the statue and fountain is breathtaking. A must see if in Bordeaux.

Fantastic monument. Even the creepy sea horses with claws and tentacles are so enthusiastic that you get swept up in a republican frenzy. Also, they're spewing water out their noses, so it makes them seem less threatening. I'm not sure why the statue babies doing artwork look so stern, but I dig it anyway.

Finished in 1902, this marvelous monument stands proud to commemorate the execution of the Girondins deputies. It’s really beautiful and the sound of water pouring from everywhere is just so soothing. It might be a bit crowded at some point of the day.

Please visit this place if you are like me. I love statues and scullture arts. When I saw this, I told to myself this is what I am looking for. I can stay there for an hour to watch this art. This is totally public, you dont need to pay for anything. 10/10 totally recommended

It’s beautiful especially in the day time and it’s so quiet which makes it peaceful to relax and take it all in. Usually a small cafe near by and food stall (churros ) which was just what we needed after a day of sight seeing.

Monument aux Girondins, Bordeaux
Monument aux Girondins, Bordeaux (must see)
The Monument aux Girondins is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive landmarks. A statue atop a 43-metre high column, it is completed at the base by an ornate fountain, cast in bronze. It can be found on the Esplanade de Quinconces, a wide promenade next to the River Garonne. The monument is a tribute to the Girondins, a political group that has roots in the Gironde department, of which Bordeaux is the capital. An affiliation of radical intellectuals, they were intrinsic to the wave of anti-royal feeling which swept France in the 18th century. Eventually, the movement swept beyond their control, with the outbreak of the revolution.

The monarchy was overthrown, and divisions grew between Paris and provincial France. The Girondins’ rival political group, the Montagnards, assumed power and called for the execution of the group’s ringleaders. They famously sang “rather death than slavery”, when facing the guillotine, and became martyrs for the cause of free and peaceful France. The statue at the top of the column represents Freedom breaking out of his shackles. The Girondins, a source of great local pride, share this public space with statues of Charles Louis de Montesquieu and Michel de Montaigne, two other popular local figures.

Why You Should Visit:
Huge, impressive, massive water fountain. At the base of the monument's central column, there is a massive, elaborate and heroic landscape of statuary – horses, cherubs, sea creatures and human figures – each one sculpted in a vigorous and strikingly realistic motion. The whole thing is just bursting with energy and the water playing and spraying in and around it adds to this feeling of a captured moment in a tumult of motion. It is a similar effect to the bombastic marble fountain at Trevi in Rome but possibly even better executed.

Tip:
Looks awesome when it turns dark and lights turn on.
Be sure and climb up behind the fountains to get a better view of the statues.

The monument is quite pretty and interesting, with a cooling back story. Unfortunately, it's next to an area that resembles an unused fair ground. 5 stars for the monument, 1 star for its unfortunate surroundings.

Beautiful monument right in the heart of Bordeaux. It is located in a square with easy access, close to many means of transportations. It is a good place to take some pictures during a sunny day. The water in the fountains makes summer afternoons a little cooler.

There are monuments and then there is this stupendous monument to the Girondins in Bordeaux! When you enter the Place de la Comédie from Rue Sainte-Catherine, you can't miss this monument located in Place des Quinconces. This fifty four metres column with the statue of Liberty perched on the very top surrounded by horses and bronze groups. I was absolutely mesmerized by the sheer size of the fountain with exquisite sculptures depicting classical characters like Republic, Concorde, Gallic rooster (one of the emblem of France), etc. This is accessible by foot or several tramlines stop here. It's a couple of minutes from the Bordeaux Tourism Office. A great experience with stunning ambiance and a must visit monument in Bordeaux.

Beautiful square with a great fountain. Would suggest to make this part of a walking tour. Start at ‘Pont du Pierre’ and walk to the ‘City of wine’. In that way you will have the view of the river on one side and pass the land marks: ‘Place de la Bourse’, ‘Place du Parlemant’ and ‘Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas’.

The most significant and striking monument in Place des Quinconces is simply beautiful. The steps are ideal to taking a little break, and a little time to reflect. Each breathtaking piece of the monument is soaked with symbolism reflecting the city's relationship with it's people and it's past.
