Devil Dog Fountain

Visited here early October 2023, a must for all Marines! Here’s the deal:
1) Museum is closed a few days a week, and the fountain is kept behind a locked gate. No problem. Just walk to the American cemetery, see the caretaker or any of the security members and they will give you the key.
2) The road is narrow, and people live nearby. It’s a decent walk, maybe 500m from the road, so older persons and those with limitations may have difficulty with that.

Hope all current and past Marines are able to make this pilgrimage with their families. Semper Fidelis.

Beautiful Place to honor history.
Ask for the Key from across the Street at the Museum.... If Closed go to the guard shack at the American cemetery and request the key.

Great experience.
Please know that if the gate is locked. You can ask the staff at the Marine Monument for the Key to unlock the gate.

The Museum is open from May 8 through November 11th this year (2023). If you arrive before or after these dates, go to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetary (aka Cimetière américan du bois Belleau) visitors center (less than a 5 minute drive south from the fountain). They will loan you the gate key to visit the fountain.

All Marines need to make the pilgrimage to this hollowed place and drink from the pure waters of the Devil Dog (Teufel Hunden) fountain….. SEMPER FI !!

Marines visiting the site take a drink in the belief those who drink from it will receive strength and protection in battles to come. It's also done to remember the Marines who fought there and those who never came home.

There is some interesting history of this estate and how Marines in 1918 claimed this as an iconic place. Just outside of this village is the cemetery and woods. Every Jarhead should try and visit. I did a three day tour starting at Waterloo, Belleau Woods and Bastogne.

Beautiful!! IF you are in the area please stop and visit this place. It is the place of a big battle with the Marines. This is where Devil Dog became the Marines nickname.

Please ensure you come before 12:30 or after 1:30, as they are closed for lunch; the best part is that they are super friendly.

Thank you for the upkeep and preservation of this Devil Dog Fountain; this Marine will forever be grateful.

It is an incredible pilgrimage for me. To be a part of this beloved Marine Corps is a true privilege.

Gate was locked and the museum across the street was closed for lunch (12:30 -1:30) so we didn't get to view it. However, my brother was there a few weeks earlier and did.

A must see on the US Marine pilgrimage to Belleau Woods. The key is at the museum across the street.

The Marines earned their nickname in the woods and fields nearby and drank from this fountain in 1918. If you ask at the museum they will provide you with a key to the gate and you can drink from the fountain. Just return the key and be respectful is all they ask.

Took my dad the Devil's Dog Fountain. If you going during off season for the museum, then the cemetery down the road will have a key as well.

This has become almost a sacred place to us Marines and I'm thankful that the ladies at the museum were accommodating as I arrived literally 2minutes before they closed for lunch.

This is not an official open place. I posted photos of the gate that you must walk through. It is across from the Belleau Mairie Bus stop. Its Private property, but you are safe to visit the fountain. Watch my video to orient yourself. There is also a museum in the Mairie Building. Check it for open hours because they change seasonally. If you find that the gate is locked, gi to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetary and Memorial just down the road. The security guard will have the key. You can take it and bring it back like I did. This was a very good visit for me. 11 years Active Marine Corps and a huge history fan. I drank from the fountain. I highly recommend this place.

Best to rent a car to get there. Its a long, but beautiful scenery. At the information room the can give you THE key with a map to open the gates to the fountain. Every devil dog should go to it.

In short if you are a Marine you Must go. I went November 11th and it was lightly raining. The rain gave a very humbling experience and an atmosphere or sense of walking in the past.

A must see experience for all, especially Marines. Museum across the street provides history and access.
