L' Alcôve Chambres d'hôtes

I loved my stay at L'Alcôve!! It is my preferred place to stay in Conques. The rooms are beautifully decorated with a gorgeous view of the Cathedral. It is centrally located in the middle of town with restaurants and cafés nearby. Xavier and Valérie are very accomodating and welcoming hosts, eager to help in any way they can. Valérie also operates an illuminated manuscript workshop on site, which is what led me to this accomodation!
Breakfast includes artisanal bread and organic, healthy products. You will not be disappointed in your choice of this bed and breakfast in lovely Conques.

Extraordinary old building right opposite the abbey. Sensitively & tastefully restored to be a high class b&b.

This is a superb location and chambres d'hôtes that is well run, very clean and lovely in one of the most magical villages in all of France. It is truly a spiritual center along the Camino.

What a great place to stay in Conques, whether you are a pilgrim passing through or a weekend tourist! Easily the best location in town and the best view of the Cathedral. Valérie & Xavier, you are very generous hosts. It was great to get to know you over breakfast and see your amazing calligraphy! Accommodations were perfect - all modern amenities with a comfy bed and a nice touch of the old world! Thanks for being super helpful with our logistical and other challenges and going the 'extra mile' for us! This is the place we will stay when we come back! ~Allan and Casey

A really lovely Chambre d’Hote in Conques. We were walking the Chemin and were grateful for such a beautiful, comfortable room after a long wet day! The hosts were very kind, one spoke English, and were able to guide us for dinner. A simple but delicious breakfast to get us on our way for the next leg of our journey was greatly appreciated!

Loved my stay at L'Alcove. Very warm welcome and one of the nicest views from my window I've ever seen. Comfortable room and breakfast with the host; I would come back in a heartbeat. Also must note the owner is a wonderful artist of medieval-style paintings-- a nice touch for the decor in the room!

We had a wonderful stay at l'Alcove, where Xavier and Valérie are friendly, helpful hosts. The views from the window are the best in Conques! Seeing Valérie's beautiful illuminated pictures in the little shop below the guest house is an added bonus.

If France were a treasure chest, then its tiny villages are the jewels and the prettiest gem is the medieval village of Conques. Tucked into a hillside and named for the conch shell shape it resembles, Conques lies on a thousand year old pilgrimage route, the Chemin de St Jacques. For over a thousand years, pilgrims have travelled to Conques for healing and forgiveness; today, modern pilgrims and tourists alike stop in this delightful Unesco World Heritage site and one of France’s “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (the most beautiful villages in France)”.

Coming off the trail for the day, you are greeted with views of the eleventh century Abbey St Foy rising far above the valley floor. The afternoon light glows on worn cobblestones and the traveler is drawn to wander the tiny nooks and crannies of this wonderful little hamlet. Following a narrow alley, you find your way to the door of your inn for the evening, L’Alcove Conques.
Run by the delightful Valerie and Xavier, L’Alcove is a three story structure that transports you back in time, yet with all the modern comforts. The ground floor is Valerie’s workshop of medieval illuminations. This talented artist felt called after her own pilgrimage to revive the art form of medieval illuminations. Her gorgeous art is created with pigments she grinds herself and highlighted with tiny bits of gold leaf, just as monks illustrated Biblical texts a thousand years ago.

The second floor opens from the cobbled alley to an entry way with weathered beams leading to two rooms, insulated with ancient thick walls. Throw open the wooden shutters and you are greeted with a view of the ancient Abbaye St Foy, a stone's throw away. You are transported back in time, as the soft chimes of the abbey’s bells float through the open windows. The room has a beautiful ambiance of peace and calm, much welcomed after a long day of hiking. Valerie’s artistic eye is evident again in the rustic elegance of the furnishings with the comfortable bed and wonderful linens.

Old world France meets modern comforts when it comes to the lovely and spotlessly clean bathroom with abundant hot water. The tiniest details, like the hand towel with flowered embroidery, make your stay feel special.

Sleep comes easily in this quiet room after an evening spent in the ancient cathedral, listening to a history lecture (in French) given by one of the monks and then an otherworldly organ recital inside its Gothic spaces.

In the morning, Xavier brews his delicious coffee in the upstairs kitchen and there is fun conversation along with delicious breakfast breads, one made by Valerie. There is an abundance of food and plenty of coffee to get you going for next stage of hiking

Perhaps the true gems of this delightful village are Xavier and Valerie, for sharing their wonderful home, making sure their guests are comfortable and keeping history alive in this sparkling little town.

Superbe chambre d'hôtes, une expérience unique. La chambre est très confortable, bien agencée, parfaitement située dans Conques, avec une belle vue sur l'abbaye. L'accueil par les hôtes a été très chaleureux. Le petit déjeuner est copieux et savoureux.

Nous avons passé un moment parfait chez Valérie et Xavier qui sont des hôtes adorables.
La chambre est parfaitement située au centre du village, face à l'abbatiale.
Nous avons pu avoir egalement de beaux échanges avec Xavier au petit déjeuner du lendemain, petits déjeuners avec des produits locaux et de petits gâteaux maison confectionnés par Valérie.

Très belle chambre. Confortable et propre. En plein cœur de Conques face à l’Abbatiale. Accueil au top. Et cerise sur le gâteau très beaux échanges avec Valérie sur son métier, son parcours. Xavier est aussi une personne très agréables prêt à donner conseils sur le chemin et les étapes suivantes. Je recommande. Passez aussi une tête dans leur boutique respective. L’atelier du chemin pour Valérie et la confiserie sur la place de l’église pour Xavier. Merci du fond du cœur à tous les deux.

Tout était parfait : l'accueil souriant et agréable, la chambre dans un décor adorable, la literie de bonne qualité, un petit déjeuner copieux et varié. Des conseils avisés pour visiter la ville et son Abbaye, avec concert et illuminations. C'était ma première fois à Conques et j'ai été conquise, grâce à Valérie et Xavier. Un grand merci pour ces jolis moments. Je recommande ces chambres d'hôte de qualité.

Merci Valérie et Xavier pour l'accueil chaleureux. Même si vous n'avez pas été là pour notre arrivée, tout c'est très bien passé.
La chambre était top, la vue imprenable. J'ai adoré le carrelage du sol dans la salle de bain.
Merci aussi pour le petit-déjeuner délicieux avec le petit cake de Valérie et la présence très attentionné de Xavier.
Nous reviendrons en tout les cas l'année prochaine quand nous continuerons notre chemin.

Après une journée de marche sur les chemins de Compostelle, nous avons été très bien accueillis, la chambre était très propre et très agréable avec une vue magnifique sur l'abbatiale Ste-Foy. Nous avons profité des conseils de Xavier pour assister le soir à la présentation du Tympan et au concert donné dans l'abbatiale.
Le petit déjeuner organisé par Xavier est à la hauteur de la prestation globale.
Je recommande aux pèlerins et touristes d'y séjourner !

J'ai réservé une chambre pour faire étape sur mon chemin. Quelle chouette découverte ! Tant sur le travail de Valérie que les conseils sur Conques de Xavier. La maison est agréable, les chambres grandes et confortables, la vue superbe, l'accueil chaleureux et le petit-déjeuner délicieux. Le tout donne envie d'y revenir pour un plus long séjour.

La chambre de Valerie et Xavier est magnifique, belle, confortable, très propre, la vue est exceptionnelle !
Le petit déjeuner était délicieux (craquottes sans gluten prévues pour nous). Nos hôtes étaient prévenants, chaleureux et nous ont donné tous les bons conseils pour parfaire notre séjour. Nous recommandons vivement ce lieu.
