The views are spectacular. It was a clear day and we could see over the Bristol Channel, the dunes were high and sometimes different, but we managed to climb the three cliffs and slide down onto the beach and see the caves. We walked through an alcove and up over the opposite site side over stepping stones towards the Church Ruins and Berial Chamber and onwards towards Oxwich Bay. Lots of wildlife and historic Cairns, but the overgrown ferns and bracken makes it impossible to find. Fantastic walk and well worth a visit

Pennard Castle, Near Three Cliffs Bay, Wales

(From the Information Boards)
Built in the late 13th or early 14th century
Originally, a ringwork fortification was built on the site in the 12th century. It is thought that it was built by Henry Beaumont, 1st Earl of Warwick, when he became the first Lord of Gower. The castle was then rebuilt in the late 13th century, probably by the powerful William de Braose, upgrading it largely in alignment with the original ringwork.

Pennard Castle was built to make a statement of power and exists as another symbol of the Norman lordship of the area. However, by 1650 it was described in a survey as desolate and ruinous, and the land around it "wholly besanded by meanes of the nearnesse thereof unto the sea".

The castle site was excavated in 1961, and within the walls were found the remains of two service rooms, a communal hall and a retiring room. The roof was thought to be thatched as there was no evidence of other roofing material during the excavations. The excavation site was then reburied to prevent further damage to the remains.

We decided to take the hardest route up a steep sandy hill. But boy the view totally made up for me nearly eating sand a few times. There is an easier route to take but we love a good challenge. Views are excellent and breath taking.

I’m a huge fan of castles and this ruin is absolutely gorgeous. It was interesting to read about the history of the castle from the information boards, and the view of the valley is amazing! I would warn parents that there are long drops with no barriers or signs so this place can be dangerous for young children.

Beautiful!! Google maps tries to take you to a housing development nearby but don’t listen. Go to the Gower Heritage Center and they’ll give you a walking map! The views were incredible and the walk was lovely, even in cold December!

I love visiting all our castles in Wales especially the really picturesque ones like this. Parked at Southgate and had a nice stroll over and down onto the beach for a different view.

There's not a huge amount left of the castle, but it commands a fantastic position up on the top of a hill overlooking Three Cliffs bay. The views are stunning and well worth the 10 minute walk up from the beach.

A short walk (5 mins) through the golf course. I would suggest going at sunset - the views and photos are worth it. Some information on a notice board is available on the way. No entry tickets required.

Lovely little castle ruins with an amazing view of the valley and beach. It’s was built in 12th century out of wood then rebuilt in stone in 13th-14th century. Good spot for a picnic with a view. There are cows crazing the land around so quite a few cow pats and the cows can get a bit too close for comfort sometimes. Good spot for photography too as the ruins look most majestic.

Stopped at the Pennard Castle after finding the location on a Google suggestion while visiting the surroundings.
I am so glad we stopped!
I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful the castle, the site and the view is!
It reminded me of a fairytale castle with the scenic view.
Had the best time exploring and taking pictures!

Beautiful castle ruins overlooking the three cliffs bay.
Well worth the visit, only a short walk across the golf green. (Public footpath)
As this is only ruins, it is not a complete castle. But the views make up for it, whatever the weather.
I enjoyed both times visiting the ruins, once in the sunshine and the other in the wind, mist and rain.

Beautiful ruined castle on a hill above Three Cliffs Beach, free of charge. Did a round trip walk to the beach from the visitor centre. Come out of yhe centre, cross the road to the sign for the path through a wooded area. To the right leads to a gentle path down to the beach. If you cross the stepping stones across the river at the beach, you can walk up through the sand dunes to the castle, from there, take the left hand path down through the trees just before you would cross the golf course and that takes you back to your starting point on the path from the other direction.
Besutiful views. So peaceful.

Of all the places that I’ve celebrated the winter solstice, this has to be one of the most bonkers. The choir gathered here for some suitably pagan and wintry harmony singing before heading back to Sue and Lisa’s place for warmth and hot food.

It’s on the eastern lip of the valley, as it becomes the opens up into the mouth that faces the sea at Three Cliffs Bay, and offers the first really good viewpoint of the beach and sea as you walk from the village across the golf links.

A great place to stop and stare at the ox bows below you, the great storm beach, and the wild wings swept mass of tidal sand.

Worth the walk up the hill either through the woods from the road or up the dunes alongside the golf club if coming from the beach.

This is my son's favourite walk! Loves running up the sand dune to the castle and back down(we walk). Worth the pain to get to the top as amazing view and perfect picnic spot.

Not much left but the main gate where you can see the bow slots and spear holes used to kill and maim would be intruders. Beautiful views, look out for flying golf balls.

Such a lovely castle...the views from it are stunning, especially on a summer's day or sunset. There isn't too much left of it, but it's still a castle! There is an interesting and rare plant that grows on the castle's wall - Yellow Whitlow Grass.
