Windermere is truly a gem nestled in the breathtaking Lake District. From the moment you arrive, you're greeted by stunning views of the lake, surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery. Whether you're here for a peaceful retreat or an adventure-filled getaway, Windermere has something for everyone.

Beautiful scenery and plenty of spaces to sit and take it all in. Just the right amount of shops and cafes. Ample parking.

Beautiful place, better to stay in Windermere instead of any other places nearby. You will get Day trips, Cycle Rides, Lakeview resorts, Ferry Travels, Parties and more.
But be cautious with train activities, bus/taxi transportation is very less from oxenholme.

Lovely lake with stunning scenery. You can choose a variety of boat trips to explore the lake and scenery. There are public toilets and plenty of parking located close by. There are also a variety of museums, shops, cafes and pubs.

Such a lovely place, we have visited it on our trip to the Haven holiday park located in Lake District. Very peaceful and every single person we have meet been so friendly to us. A place well worth to go to and explore.

Lovely town to visit and great place to explore Lake District from. We stayed in Windermere town, near the train station, instead of Bowness. Some thoughts on visiting the Lake District:

You don't need a car, and in fact, taking the bus is better because:
a) there's no need to worry about parking; and
b) the buses run hourly to all the touristy towns anyway. Stagecoach service 555 is supposed to be the prettiest route in the UK and I agree, the view from the upper deck is beautiful.
c) it costs only 70 pounds for a 7 days pass for up to 5 people and it's unlimited travel

Windermere is slightly quieter than Bowness so it's pleasant for families, more relaxed and laid back.

I've attached a picture taken from my AirBnB which shows the typical architecture of buildings in Windermere.

For those who are into astrophotography, Windermere may not be as dark as some smaller villages but it's good enough. On clear nights, you see lots of stars and you can still take good pictures. Those I've attached were taken from the backyard of my AirBnB while watching Netflix in the living room.

Absolutely gorgeous views from the museum and honest pretty much anywhere that you stop around the lake.
I have not visited since I was a child and really enjoyed just sitting and taking in the scenery.
As with a lot of Cumbria if you visit on dry days it's stunning.

Windermere offers a plethora of recreational activities and scenic vistas. One can embark on a boat excursion around the lake, rent a boat at a reasonable cost, engage in kayaking, fishing, or simply relax at one of the numerous vantage points and observe the passage of time. Ample parking is available. However, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a favourable spot. Additionally, there are several excellent dining establishments in the vicinity, although the inclusion of hash browns in a full English breakfast may be a matter of personal preference. Tesco Express is conveniently located for any necessary purchases. I wholeheartedly endorse this location.

A direct bus route from Kendal to Windermere is available, offering passengers a scenic and aesthetically pleasing journey. The locale boasts exceptional beauty and tranquility, particularly noted during a March visit. Despite the chilly weather, the snow-clad mountains enhanced the visual experience. A brief ascent of a modest hill afforded a commendable panoramic view. Regrettably, time constraints prevented a comprehensive hike, a consideration for subsequent visits

Taking a cruise on Lake Windermere is a delightful experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of England’s largest lake.

There's a variety of scenic cruises departing from several piers: Ambleside, Bowness, Brockhole, and Lakeside. The most popular ones are:

• Red Cruise: A half-lake cruise with mountain views, covering the route from Bowness to Ambleside via Brockhole. About 75 minutes.

• Yellow Cruise: A scenic half-lake cruise to the southern tip of Windermere, connecting Bowness and Lakeside. About 90 minutes.

• Islands (Blue) Cruise: A shorter cruise that introduces you to the lake’s islands, mountains, and historical sites. It departs from Bowness and returns to the same pier, lasting about 45 minutes.
