Amazing local shop and the owners are fantastic, helped out others loads during the pandemic with deliveries of food and kept stocked up throughout, a massive effort.
The shop is well stocked with lots of craft local items and bigger brands. Great wine selection also. Well worth a visit.

Lovely park for a gentle circular walk. Enjoy the river and the excellent pathways. The wine bars and Darleys restaurant.

Staff are friendly however it's expensive and inconsistent with the stock. The cost of milk and bread is eye watering especially as its 3.5 pints for £1.95 when 6 pints elsewhere costs £2.20. Also used to sell things like cheap cat litter which I can't remember seeing recently and boxes of 12 pouches of food however it seems to be individual pouches on a 2 for 1 offer but each flavour has a different offer so be aware of that.

The new decor is nice and I like how the space is being used, the new till system is good but unfortunately we avoid using it as much as we did.

This local shop used to always be fully stocked, especially with the basics such as milk , bread, cheese, loo roll, the usuals.

Since the shop has acquired new “keepers” it has certainly taken a nose dive. So many occasions the shelves are bare, including this morning with NO BREAD!

The freezers are empty and never full, no variety for vegetarians anymore, the ice cream freezer used to be empty on a weekend in the summer when it should be packed, no beers from local suppliers/Independents as it used to be.

But now there are cakes on the front (uncovered mostly) Soup(???) and an awkwardly placed coffee machine that looks out of use. Also lots of prime energy drinks that clearly aren’t selling as they are so much cheaper in the chains.

It is such a shame, they don’t even do cash back anymore , as this used to help us so much.
There isn’t a cash point in the village, so grabbing those basics from the shop would be beneficial to add some cash back when going out for the day or to settle a small reward bill with your son!

The owner seems friendly enough but the trip to the wholesalers and daily delivery’s seem like they need to seriously be ramped up as the shop looks like it is closing down.

The idea seems to be like a general store you would find in monyash, those little snug Peak District villages selling over priced tourist goods…. This is Darley abbey , and they are the “only shop in the village” for residents and day trippers.

I have now resorted to booking a secondary online shop to counteract this sad state of affairs with our local shop. This pains me being a fan of shop local culture when I can.

I speak for quite a few locals when the conversation comes up about the lack lustre stock presence, but I guess if the till is showing profit and they don’t have to fill the shelves, why bother? However, this will drive more people away though and this business has so much potential as it did when maximised by the previous owners.

Please take this long winded review as a positive , as me and a number of others would love nothing more than a return of a fully stocked, varied local shop, so we don’t have to put as much money into J.Sainsbury, the Aldi and Lidl empire and be able spent local more often.

Kind regards
