Nagymaros
Every year, tens of thousands of tourists are attracted to Nagymaros, a city considered to be one of the gems of the Danube Bend. The town is popular among vacationers and hikers alike, and the national Blue Trail passes through it. However, we can reach Nagymaros' truly beautiful areas not just by hiking the Blue Trail, but also by exploring the many hiking and biking trails that crisscross the surrounding countryside. The first stop of the international kayak tour, the Danube Tour, is also located here.

If we need a little change of perspective, the ferry can take us to Visegrád at any time, where further hiking trails and interesting sights await us.

The chestnut grove above the city is considered a botanical rarity. According to tradition, it was planted by King Charles Robert from sweet chestnut trees brought from Italy. Based on the Italian model, the park-like area with its walkways and resting places, however, fell victim to the weekend houses and the spread of the chestnut blight brought over from America in later centuries. Today, we can see the centuries-old chestnut forest on a much smaller area.

In the mid-19th century, the southern border of Nagymaros was represented by Green Tree Street, which was the "Treschplatz" or threshing place. After the railway station was built, new houses and new streets were created. It is worth stopping by the second house on the left side of Green Tree Street. Since the beginning of the 20th century, many have recorded their presence there on its bricks, leaving funny messages to future generations or just writing their names on them. If we feel like it, let's search for some inscriptions.

Two famous people also chose Nagymaros as their home in their twilight years: Kálmán Kittenberger, an African explorer, hunter, and zoologist, and Pállya Celesztin, an Italian-born painter, to whom we owe much of the Feszty Panorama. Celesztin's life was also affected by World War II: a bomb destroyed all of his possessions. From his remaining meager funds, he bought a small house in Nagymaros, where he was later caught by death in 1948. The city named one street after each man.

One more interesting fact about Nagymaros: the city's men's choir was founded in 1904, and since then, it has become one of the country's most famous choirs

Sandy beach, cold water of Danube. Not too clean. Several place to eat or drink.

We didn't use the ferry actually, but we used the lángos, and it was excellent!
