Devoutly the most sought after Murugan temple and legendly and historically one of the most popular rock hill temple surrounded with beautiful landscape and agricultural fields. The deity here is Lord Muruga. The idol of Lord Muruga is placed alongwith Valli Devi. Though located in Thuckalay on the Thiruvananthapuram Kanyakumari NH route in Tamilnadu, the temple is very important to Keralites also. Conducting marriages and performing certain hindu rituals like baby feeding, hair tonning, kavadi etc etc are considered as highly auspicious. Hundreds visit this shrine daily. Devotees can perform flower anointing (പുഷ്പാഭിഷേകം) and other special poojas. Steep stone steps and barrier free slopes for disables to enter the temple premises and sanctorium. Car parkings available. Bus and Auto services also available. Nearby this temple, about 1km away, their exist another three temples devotionally very prominent which are Melankode Devi temples and Lord Shiva temple (which is one among the Shivalaya ottam temples). If you are an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga don't miss Kumara Kovil as this temple promises such a divine experience. Till date no major expansions, modernisations and updations happened in Kumara Kovil temple.

'Wherever there is a hill, there is an abode for Lord Murugan.’ True to this saying, there is a beautiful temple for Lord Murugan at the foothill of Velimalai, on the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, fifteen kilometers northwest of Nagercoil on the road to Thiruvananthapuram, bordering the town of Padmanabhapuram.

Set in scenic surroundings, the temple is renowned among all the Murugan temples in Kanyakumari District. There are many versions as to how the hill derived its name veli malai. Vel was the surname for the Ay rulers. The Ay kingdom was a medieval Hindu feudal kingdom on the Malabar coast of South India. The hill that belonged to the Ay rulers came to be called as Velimalai. It is also known as Velvi Malai since Lord Murugan performed a yagna of sublime love, for the purpose of union of jivatma with Paramatma.

Kumarakovil is also known as Kumara Kshetram and Subrahmanya Sthala in Malayalam. The early Tamil epic Cilappatikkaram refers to the temple as Chera Nattu Aeragam.

Kumarakovil is a very ancient temple, as attested by the massive sculpture of Lord Murugan in a style dating from the Buddhist period. Buddhism probably flourished from 650-850 CE in Kerala. However, the available inscriptions about the temple date from from the 18th century CE only.

An ancient lord Murugan temple. The idol is quite big. 1-2 kms inside of the main road between Trivandrum to Nagercoil. Less crowded on the day of our visit.

Divine place. We went to the temple to shave my baby's hair and offer to God. We went in the morning and the place was Little crowded but the barber was available. We bought fresh blade sandal paste and small cloth from there itself for the ceremony. After the shave, there is hot water available in that premise itself and we bought the water and bathed my baby. After that we put sandal paste on her head and then went to temple. Temple was divine and clean. Muruga moorthi was looking very good. If u buy Pooja offering basket, then u need to take ticket for that. You can any offerings there. The surroundings have small tiffin centers shops and have parking facilities. One pond is there and you can bath there also. Altogether very good experience

As always this place is crowded with kerala people and also they are specially treated for no reason. You can see Tamil people will wait like they have no other go eventhough they are ready to offer many things but kerala people will just come and pray and will get treated like kings.. I dont know y? But Lord Murugan knows everything and ready to hear and talk to you very patiently with smiling face along with Lord Valli..

Powerful God worshipped through generations

Lord Muruga is seen accompanied by Goddess Valli.....

I grew up visiting this temple with my Appa & Amma. My father used to tell lots of stories surrounding the temple. We used to visit atleast twice a month

Try to visit the temple during Deeparadhana time in morning and evening. It’s really auspicious and gratifying. It’s held around 5:15 to 5:30 in the Mornings and 6:30 to 7pm in the Evenings

Lemon Garland, Red flower garlands (Arali or അരളി / அரளி ) (Rose/ரோஜா/റോസാപൂവ്)
Etc are preferred here

Garlands made of Chrysanthemum or Jamanthi (ജമന്തി/சாமந்தி) or flowers produced artificially are not used / accepted here

Panchamritham, Ghee Pongal etc are beloved offerings for Lord Muruga

Hot Unniyappams given as parasadam is very tasty

Off late, Parking our vehicles has been a concern due to lack of space around the temple

🙂

One the famous temple for Lord Muruga in Kanyakumari District...
Situated near Thuckalay approx 80 from Thiruvananthapuram, 20 km from Nagercoil. Easy to reach. The drive from Thuckalay to Kumarakovil is very beautiful and peaceful.
Not for tourists it’s only for devotees.
Around 1230 hours daily Aarti is carried by the pandits. After the Aarti the temple is closed and reopened in evening only.
Annadanam for devotees (only around 100) is provided daily inside the temple.
Around Kumarakovil many tourist places are their.

2. Mondaicadu Temple
3. Colachel
4. Vatacotai

Vellimalai Kumaraswamy Temple is located at Kumarakovil, a small village in Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu. Temple is built on a hill named 'Velimalai' about 200 metres in heigt. The name "Veli" was named from the Malayalam word "veli" means marriage. It is the place where marriage of Murugan and Valli was done. From temple entry we can see only idol of Lord Murugan, but when we get inside the temple (sreekovil) we could see devi Valli at the right side of Lord Murugan. Kumarakoil is one of the popular Murugan temples in the district of Kanyakumari. Here we can see green paddy fields, banana gardens, coconut trees and the mountain in the background with mind blowing natural beauty with peaceful and blessed atmosphere.

Temple is very peaceful and quiet. We went for hair cutting of our 2yr old son, we have to take ticket from shop in front of temple and wait for the barber to come. The barber is very professional and dedicated, within 2 minutes he cleaned full hair. Then we have to give 101rs as dekshina and took bath in the pond near by which was clean. Then we went to temple and prayed.
