I had been looking forward to visit the Kallil Bhagavati Temple, near Perumbavoor, in Kerala, for long. It was made possible only the other day, and it was worth the wait. The temple, built into a single piece of boulder, is awe-inspiring. The temple structure is believed to date back to the third century BC, according to some experts, with some of them saying that it could have been a Jain place of worship where monks used to do penance once.
There are some other temples in Kerala too having Jain and Buddhist features, which leads to a theory that Jainism and Buddhism were once being followed by a considerable section of the population.

This is a wonderful rich site. Kallil temple, as they say is where history and mystery rest on great stones. Before you go read something of the history as it was a Jain Temple in the early days but in the 9th Century it became the Bhagwati temple. And that is where the legend of the beautiful woman and the stones plays out and gives a context to the amazing features. Well worth the effort of about a 30km drive from Angamaly as we did.

Calm and divine place. A place with lot of greenery and pure air. The roof of the Temple is made with a big single rock. You will be amazed to see how this temple is formed.

The shrine is a wonder that is under a big hanging rock. We can see a wall constructed around the shrine but that is recently constructed one and actually not bearing any load. The main festival is on trikarthika which comes in the karthika day of Vrischika month if malayalam calendar (karthikai masam of tamil calendar). A number of rock carvings we can see here in the temple premise. Elephant, shank(sea shell), swan etc are there. Some shastha like carving also there, when checked in google comes to know that some people believe it as jaina. Its nearer to perumbavoor town. A wild ambience is there everywhere around the temple.
And near by must visit place is Iringol kavu durga temple. Its a forest temple dedicated to godess Durga. Only 20 minute travel from kallil bhagavathi temple to iringol kavu. From iringol kavu if we travel less than 1km we can visit Nagasseri mana-children's park. There is an entry free of ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for a child.

The Kallil Bhagwati Temple located at Perumbavoor Medala is a place where faith and nature meet. This goddess temple with daily worship is located in a huge rock gorge. The natural scenery around will satisfy the devotees and tourists. The Kallil Guha Temple at Metala, which later became the Bhagavathy Temple, is a relic of Jainism that once existed in the Perumbavoor area. The temple is situated between huge rocks. Although the deity is Bhagavati, Jain figures carved into the rock can still be seen. Kallil is a place of historical and archeological importance rather than a goddess temple

If you're a person who loves exploring culturally significant places, also if you are into visiting a temple in relatively remote location, this place is ideal.

There are lot of constructions coming in that place, which actually lessens it's natural existence.

But well maintained.

Situated at the top of a small hill surrounded by forest, this temple situates inside a cave, where we can see trails of ancient mahavir temple. Surrounded by huge trees .

It's an ancient temple carved from Rock.
It's around 2km from Odakkali in Perumbavoor Munnar route.
Believed to be an old Jain temple and is a protected mournament..
You don't have to get down from the vehicle when u reach the initial rock steps, the vehicle can go till the foot steps of the temple..

Visiting this temple can really be a good experience.
Great atmosphere.

Kallil temple is a famous temple near perumbavoor. It is a cave temple. The huge rock that stands on the roof of the shrine does not touch the ground. The Goddess is enshrined in a cave made of stone. The festival is celebrated on the Karthika day in the month of Scorpio. The Kallil temple festival falls on the Karthika of the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam, either in November or December. The idol is placed atop a female elephant, not a tusker as in the other temples of Kerala.

According to legend, the goddess had turned a hapless tusker, who was forced to shoulder the idol, into stone. The elephant-shaped stone near the temple is a spooky reminder of the story.
The festival lasts for eight days. Temple closes at 10.30 am on usual days. The temple is located at a distance of 10 km from Perumbavoor. It is located at a distance of 4 km from Odakali between Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam.
The temple is owned by the Kallil Pisharody devasom.
It is now preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Department.
The two most important vows here are the stone vow and the broom vow. The broom vows are made for women to grow hair and for men to change family troubles. The broom vow is made of wool without touching the iron and offered to the temple.
The stone vows to complete the housework that was stopped half way. If you bring two or three stones from the house where the work is being done and bring them to the temple for prayers, the work will be completed within a year. People who can do whatever they want come here and give thanks again and make vows and pray.
