Very cool and awesome place for a holiday. This is a floating iland with so mush sceneries. The lake is impressive and offers both beautiful landscape views as well as birdlife, which one has to explore by boat and foot on some of islands. Unfortunately there is a fair amount of littering around.
Most picturesque place to visit. A must visit place if you are in Manipur. Preferably a stay for a couple of days to enjoy the virgin beauty of the place with be the best.

A rather interesting lake in Manipur - it floats! You can walk on the phumdi as well. The folks in the area have their homes on the phumdis and are nice enough to let you look around. The lake is expansive and also a national park in areas. Beautiful place, a must visit in Manipur.

Its around 30-35km drive from main imphal city. But it's worth it. Its the largest natural freshwater lake and a famous tourist attraction. You can go to boating here though the charge is not per head basis, it will take around 600 for upto 6 people for 30 min ride. If you go there try to go to the top and have some food on the restaurant situated there, you will get the food with a great view.

Must visit. Unique and mesmerizing. If Kadhmir has Dal lake, Manipur has Loktak lake. The boating options are a bit costly and you get the sense of just scratching the surface of the lake. Do step on a fumdi to feel it .

If life were to flow from the hills to the valley, it would have accumulated like Loktak does; far & wide. It has its own weather system, own flora, own fauna.

Nestled in the valley of Manipur, Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northeast India. The lake attracts visitors from all over the world due to its ethereal beauty and floating circular swamps known as phumdi in the local language. In the early hours of the morning, you can explore the lake by boating in long fishing boats. You can also go fishing on one of the nearby fishermen islands. Hike to any of the hills overlooking the lake for spectacular sunset views and watch in awe as the sun's burning orb slides down the horizon. One can book a homestay along the lake to get a first-hand experience of life by the lake.

A long awaited visit to Loktak, the largest fresh water lake in India. Located on this phumdi, Keibul Lamjao National Park is the only floating national park in the world. The park is the last natural refuge of the endangered Sangai (state animal), Rucervus eldii eldii or Manipur brow-antlered deer, one of three subspecies of Eld's deer.

Beautiful tourist place!! Transparent water. Pisciculture facilities. Boating charm under the sky. A very good experience with camera. First go to view point at hill top, have a cup of great coffee. Take some snaps of sprawling lake. Then take a launch ride to explore the charm.

30km off from Imphal, close to Bishnupur.
To see the lake ticket is not required but for boating at the lake 700 INR per boat is required. Per head not possible. So if u are a solo traveler alike me try to manage a group of people less than 8 so that u can get the boat ride and share the amount. Actually I did like that, a group of high school students were came to boat ride and I joined with them.

Loktak Day is celebrated on 15th of October at the periphery of the Loktak lake. So if u r planning to visit Imphal/North East on 15th October try to be there.

Leme share the importance of loktak lake:

1. Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the world.

2) This lake is the formation of ancient supervolcanic caldera.

3) It is a pulsating lake, with surface area varying from 250 sq km to 500 sq km during rainy season.

4) The derivatives of word of Loktak is Lok = "stream" and tak = "the end".

5) you can see the 'phumdis' are floating all ob the lake. This lake is famous for the phumdis which means: heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter at various stages of decomposition.

6) Located on this phumdi, Keibul Lamjao National Park is the only floating national park in the world.

7) The park is the last natural refuge of the endangered Sangai (state animal), Rucervus eldii eldii or Manipur brow-antlered deer (Cervus eldi eldi), one of three subspecies of Eld's deer.

Importance: This ancient lake plays an important role in the economy of Manipur. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply. The lake is also a source of livelihood for the rural fishermen who live in the surrounding areas and on phumdis, also known as "phumshongs". Human activity has led to severe pressure on the lake ecosystem. 55 rural and urban hamlets around the lake have a population of about 100,000 people. Considering the ecological status and its biodiversity values, the lake was initially designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on 23 March 1990. It was also listed under the Montreux Record on 16 June 1993, "a record of Ramsar sites where changes in ecological character have occurred, are occurring or are likely to occur".
