Ancient and Prehistoric era
The Indus Valley Civilisation, also known as the Indus Civilisation was a Bronze Age civilisation in the northwestern regions of South Asia, lasting from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE, and in its mature form 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE. Together with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, it was one of three early civilisations of the Near East and South Asia, and of the three, the most widespread. Its sites spanned an area from much of Pakistan, to northeast Afghanistan, and northwestern India. The civilisation flourished both in the alluvial plain of the Indus River, which flows through the length of Pakistan, and along a system of perennial monsoon-fed rivers that once coursed in the vicinity of the Ghaggar-Hakra, a seasonal river in northwest India and eastern Pakistan.

Google map location for this place is incorrect. Actually the name of the place is archaeological Museum Ropar and it is situated opposite to government College Ropar. It is a must place to visit but please ensure that you don’t put Indus Valley civilisation in your Google maps and put government College Rubal or archaeological Museum, proper or just put Ajayab ghar. It is closed on Fridays other days. It is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Chance visit...thanks to Google Maps which popped up the location (nearby) while we we on way to out native place in Jalandhar. We made a short 30 mins halt....for this Indus Valley heritage site... Amazing experience. Well maintained....though I expected more ruins....this location has a lone Indus valley civilization structure..

Still I cherish visiting the place which I read more than 35 years back while still in school.

There is an Archaeological Museum in the city which is about 40 km north east of Chandigarh. It was opened in the year 1998 for the general public. The museum exhibits the archaeological remains of excavated site in the city, the first Harappan site of Independent India. This is a beautiful location to see the whole sight of this city. It is believed that this sight was destroyed by the floods seven times.

Its just an exhilarating experience to lay your foot on a piece of land which carries more 5000 years of history beneath it. The museaum is a real treat for any history lover. Nothing less than a treasure. A huge collection of unique remnants from history. Some artefacts which are part of textbooks the world over, are available here for real. If you love history, and you have not visited this place, you are missing something.

The mound in Ropar encloses in itself the history unknown to us. And has yielded various artifacts from the distant past.
The mound is located nearby the Archaeological Museum.
It provides a bird's eye view of whole Ropar. And it is a visual splendor.
The place itself doesn't have much to offer as it has an enclosed ancient building and a site which is usually closed.
Good for a family outings.
