We were incredibly lucky last year with the weather, we visited the place in October and we had a daytime hike that I will never forget, above the glacier, the colours were really breathtaking!!!
It is definitely a must see in Iceland!
Make sure you reserve your campsite in advance during peak season!!!

Amazing!!! We went there in winter, we were lucky that the weather was cold and everything was frozen.we walked to the glacier and walked on the ice without the tour guide, i dont think you need a tour guide. We went there around 9am so there were no other people

We did the hike up to get a view above the glacier, pretty long and we could have kept going but our toddler was tired. Definitely worth it for the spectacular view. Easy parking and bathrooms

Beautiful glacier. The blue ice rocks are amazing. It’s hard to get closer to them as they are surrounded by water and you need to walk on a frozen lake. The ice is covered with a small layer of dust, so it’s hard to predict how thick the ice is.
On your own risk. Please be careful.

We walked to the base of the glacier the night when we arrived at the campsite and it was beautiful with the sun out.
The following morning we walked to the waterfall and then across the top plateau to the point over the glacier - some boardwalk/some mud! Phenomenal! Longer walk than straight up the cliff facing the info centre but much easier and enjoyable in our opinion. We walked down that route and saw a lot of people battling given the recent rain and wind. One of our favourite walks in Iceland!

MUST do activity if you come to Iceland. Hike the largest glacier in Europe. But please get a guide, conditions require experience and expertise. We as a family did the 5.5 hour hike - it is a memory of a lifetime and cannot be out into words. The beauty, the scale, are all breathtaking. This hike does require some fitness and there is a less strenuous hike of about 2 hours offered as well.

Skaftafell Glacier is a wonderful site if you want to have a view on the glacier without programming an excursion with a guide.
the trip is about half an hour from the parking, so really easy.
there s also the Skaftafell Waterfall which is 45 minutes by walking from the park, another really nice and easy hike.
These spots are highly recommended.

Very nice hike, take the s5 to viewing point to the glacier, and back with s6. The view is exceptionally beautiful. The overall length of this path is about 6-7 km.

Strongly recommend hiking up to Sjónarnípa. The view of the glacier and mountains is unbelievable. This stop was definitely a highlight of my trip.

Go in the off season, and hope you don't get mixed into a tour. The GOOD side of the glacier (west) is a 2.2km walk to get to. This side has the better views and some rocky cliff side paths you can scramble along to get right up to the glacier. Be very careful because if you fall, you are unlikely to survive the rocky fall into the near freezing water.

Beautiful Glacier and a must do for everyone visiting Iceland. Book a tour to get close.
You need to book in advance. You get your great at office before the start of the tour, then it’s a short walk to the glacier and about 1 hour on the glacier itself.

Took a tour today with arctic adventures, Martin was our guide he was the absolute best, for US$90 we walked up onto the glacier hiked around for two hours drank from the water, it was absolutely amazing. I have done a lot of cool things across the globe and this is probably the coolest thing I have ever done.

Easy flat walk from the visitor's center, but alot of sand at the end to get close to the glacier. About 3km round trip. Defintely worth it to get that close to a glacier, but we did like the Svínafellsjökull Glacier better because of the lake at the end with floating icebergs. Each are equally beautiful and worth seeing though

Make sure you take a walk up to see the glacier - you see more!

The campsite at the bottom is great and open all year.

An awe striking glacier!! We didn't have the opportunity to actually climb on it on this trip, but even driving by provided a beautiful view. I would recommend taking the time to set up a hike to see the glacier close up. Either way, definitely worth taking the time to see this natural landmark.
