It was a long drive from Reykjavik and back again, but it was worth the trip

There is ample parking near the welcome centre that has nice restroom facilities, the restaurant was worth visiting for supplies that you might need for the 1.6 kilometre walk to the base of the glacier and it’s picturesque lake

Do take note of the warning signs placed for your personal safety

When it’s quiet enough, you’ll soon hear the grinding noise of the ice over the rocks

Went here on May 6th, and if we were to go back to Iceland, we would definitely skip Jökulsárlón where you have to pay 1000 ISK for parking and come here instead! This is definitely one of our favourite places in Iceland. You get so close to the glacier, and we even saw some people climbed up on top of the glacier. The views of the mountains were incredible, and icebergs were scattered everywhere. It’s free to visit, and also has free parking. It is also quieter than the other glacier spots we visited. 100% recommended.

Just a tip: Stop by at the lake for photos. It has nice reflections! Thank me later!

Fantastic view of a glacier. Just short walk from the car park (that is free of charge).

We loved our visit to Svínafellsjökull. We were able to get right up to the glacier and we had the whole place to ourselves after a short 15 min walk from the parking lot. Absolutely lovely.

Breathtaking but also very sad to see how far it's retreated. Very strange to hear the glacier groaning , creaking and cracking.
A must visit before they're gone forever.

Amazing place to see, wasn't suitable for hiking at the time but pretty awesome none the less. There's plenty of space to park a vehicle. Very little other people (we were the only ones at 11 in the morning). There's a restaurant a short drive away too so perfect to fit into a longer trip or tour.

Just beautiful, a must see when in Iceland. Breathtaking sight and a nice trail leading to the glacier. Easily accessible by car, clear warning signs.

A small part of the Vatnajokull glacier which is the largest in Europe in terms of volume. Its a 10 min walk from the parking. You cross a property, Hotel Skaftafell and in just a few minutes, you see huge masses of ice. Going by previous pictures before I visited, I must say it's actually deteriorated significantly, which was quite alarming given how much the fresh ice has retreated. The parking for this glacier is very close, just 400 m away from Ring Road and lots of space for parking.

Beautiful. It’s a bumpy road there. Just drive slowly. It’s worth the view! Go past the little gate and walk as far as you feel comfortable

Excellent stop along the ring road. The road is very bumpy to get there but is only about 3km. The views are great and you can walk right along the lagoon. Plenty of people, but also plenty of parking. Would recommend stopping here!

An easy walk from the parking area and you're at the foot of a glacier! You can literally walk right up to it but you're not allowed to walk on the glacier which is understandable. Great to be able to have this experience.

This glacier is absolutely beautiful, particularly in winter when it becomes a frozen otherworldly place. Be wary though as there is a volcanic hotspot nearby. If this glacier is affected by earthquakes, it could result in a flood. There are signs around warning of this.

Just amazing! You can walk around but it’s difficult to get closer to the glacier

Don't miss this! We almost didn't check this out, but it was well worth the stop. Very beautiful and breathtaking views of mountains and the glacier. You really get an up close view of the glacier and get a sense for the sheer size of all the ice. Definitely would visit again! Pictures don't do it justice, but it was amazing!

This place is flat out awesome. There are two raids to get here. If coming from the direction of the lagoons, take the first turn off telling you that it’s dangerous. This is a rough road and should only be taken by a 4x4, but the short, rough ride is rewarded with super close views of the glacier. Simply amazing. You could easily walk on it if you want, might have been a 10 minute walk downhill to the glacier.
