Gateways opening to roads leading to the countryside and other nearby towns can be seen today along Perugia's Etruscan walls (fourth century BC). The two most important Porte or gates were the Etruscan Arch (or of Augustus) to the north and Porta Marzia to the south, situated at the end of the main road through the city, today called Corso Vannucci and Via Rocchi.
Both entrances were opened during a major construction project on the city, implemented in the middle of the third century BC, which included, among other things, the re-building and the beautification of the city walls.

Beautiful spot. Built in 3rd century BC and built like a tank.

My tour guide shared interesting stories about how the arch was named and the political drama from ages ago! Highly recommend going here.

A splendid and monumental arch that delimits one of the entrances to the core of the historical center of Perugia. A magnificent example of Etruscan construction that welcomes you while entering this marvelous and surprising city!

Consider that this archway not only stands in its full integrity but is also 2300 years old-that's pre-Roman for you and I.
Not only that, but people also live in it!
