Locanda San Fantino

What an amazing stay! This rustic, self-sufficient Bnb is attached to its own farm and we got to eat all of the organic food as part of the experience. Sebastiano runs it and cooks for the guests as well as looking after them. We hadn't been to this part of Italy before and it's off the tourist trail. Sebastiano told us which nearby beaches were the best (the water is crystal clear!) and San Fantino is close to little villages and towns (like Sapri) as well as the scenery of the National Park and surrounding mountains. A brilliant surprise was that Sebastiano and the estate make their own biodynamic wine (which we tried lots of and loved!!). A special mention goes to the gorgeous house cat, Gattina!

We recently returned from a 3 week trip to Italy. We stayed at Sebastiano’s for just 2 nights, but it was the highlight of the trip. I’m writing a long review here because the reviews on google do not begin to capture or understand what San Fantino is:

First of all: San Fantino is not the ideal vacation spot for everyone...that’s okay! Everyone wants something different from a trip😊
It is not the place to come if you want a predictable vacation that happens to you.
But if you bring curiosity and openness, and understand that you are an active agent in the experience, you will be rewarded with such a rich and beautiful experience.

San Fantino is for you if you are comfortable with small dogs, cats, birds, plants, playful children, and a little wildness.

It is a little wild, in a way that I love. It’s located near the Cilento National Pake, the most ecologically diverse land in all of Europe. San Fantino has so many fruit trees—mandarin, lemon, apricot, pear, apple, olive, almond, plum, and more.

If you are interested in plants, gardening, cultivation of land, foraging edible and medicinal plants, true sustainability and nearly zero waste, you can learn so much here. The land is so fertile that there are wild flowers and wild edibles springing up everywhere. It is breathtaking.

Sebastiano knows just about anything you might want to know about the local wild edibles and flowers, cultivation of the land, artisanal winemaking, curing meat, and preserves.
He is an excellent cook and will cook dinner for you for 25 dollars a person. A typical dinner might be four courses. Here is a sample of some highlights from our time there: local anchovies cured with orange with house made olive oil, risotto with foraged mushrooms, braised wild boar with foraged red juniper berries, wild chicory dressed with house made vinegar, the best pasta Vongole with tiny clams from the nearby ocean. It’s not restaurant food—it’s delicious, rustic home cooking and 90 percent of the ingredients are from the land you will stay on.

The town:
San Fantino is located near the bottom of the village of San Giovanni a Piro. For me, it is one of the most charming places to visit.

If you wake up early enough you will see the trucks carrying freshly made mozzarella do buffalo and fior de latte delivering fresh product every morning to a few stores around town. The cheese is never refrigerated and it’s stored on the countertop, so you can eat the freshest mozzarella cheese everyday.

The town is located about a 10 minute drive uphill from the ocean, and San Fantino has some of the most epic ocean views. I’ve never see. A more stunning sunset.

There is amazing hiking not far from San Fantino. My fiancé and I walked along a very old road, passing vineyards and shepards with their sheep, and then hiked down to the ocean. We remarked that it looked like an incredible combination of Ireland and Hawaii. The landscape here is so unique and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

In conclusion, we absolutely loved our time at San Fantino. If you’re an adventurer, or just looking for an off-the-beaten track experience in rural Southern Italy, I absolutely recommend San Fantino for an experience like no where else.

One logistic note:
We traveled without a car, and it was no problem. You take a regional train from Naples that’s costs just about 12 euros. It takes about 2 hours. You get off at Policastro station and Sebastiano can arrange for a taxi to bring you to his home. It costs about 10 euros. Not hard at all!

An absolute gem. Last summer my wife and me were on our honeymoon and looking for a special place off the beaten track. More or less by coincidence we found this bnb and were very pleasantly suprised by the charm of the place and the charismatic and excentric owner Sebastiano. He produces his own vegetables, wine, vinegar and many other things - which are all delicious. Every night he cooked for us and every night we were stunned. It was so great, we couldn't believe it. If you're looking for a perfect clean hotel experience this is not for you. This is an old farm with pets, so you can't expect everything to be shiny. But the authentic feel, the personal service and the beautiful environment (definitely visit Scario and make a boat trip through the magnificent bay) made this a sublime get-away for us and our 1 year old baby, far from the tourist crowds. We left with a big box of wine, gin and other stuff made by Sebastiano and everlasting memories. Don't believe the people complaining about the entry road. Any person who can drive, can get there easily, even in our cheap rental.

I just fall in love with this place !! Real hidden gem. Quiet and beautiful place. I would recommend everyone to visit this place, and enjoy the nature.

Consigliato per una vacanza rilassante, lontano dal caos dei vacanzieri.
Il locandiere è una persona molto cordiale e disponibile, le camere sono belle e spaziose, come del resto la struttura che è stata sapientemente ristrutturata, conservando l'identità del luogo e l'atmosfera bucolica.
La colazione è abbondante e genuina, per la maggior parte composta dai frutti dell'azienda agricola.
Ottime e di buon livello gastronomico anche le cene che ho avuto il piacere di gustare.
Ci ritornerei sicuramente.

Posto magico, immerso nella natura, gestito in modo autentico e sostenibile. Cucina ottima, con prodotti di altissima qualità.
Cortesia, gentilezza e flessibilità da parte di Sebastiano che è stato un ottimo host.
Consigliatissimo per chi cerca relax e tranquillitá in un’affascinante cornice bucolica non convenzionale.

È un luogo per nutrire l'anima, l'ospite ospitante è colto e gentile, capace di farti scoprire il cuore del cilento. Ottimo cuoco e anfitrione, saprà accoglierti nella sua bella casa immersa nella campagna, con dettagli unici, e introdurti ai gioielli della sua terra. La soddisfazione sarà piena e tale da farti sorvolare su alcune imperfezioni di grado minore.

Posto unico per location, semplicità unita a raffinatezza, qualità del cibo. Per intenditori.

Bè, sono contenta che ci siano tante critiche: saremo in meno a poter frequentare un posto così particolare e sincero nel Cilento. Sebastiano è un ottimo cuoco e un gentile ospite, che si prende cura dei propri ospiti portandoli a scoprire angoli che altrimenti, da turisti, non potremmo mai scoprire. Il suo gin è fra i migliori assaggiati. La nostra stanza era pulita, luminosa, accogliente. Nulla di finto, standardizzato, prevedibile. Forse chi cerca soggiorni comuni non dovrebbe fermarsi qui :)

Terrible experience - see recent TripAdvisor reviews (and make sure you tick the box to include the Italian ones which are most recent). It is dirty, shabby, grossly overpriced. No hot water in the crusty shower. Bathroom separated from bedroom by a dirty curtain. Flies on the food. Pool is bright green. Don't believe the pictures - they don't represent what this place is like now (2018).

Difficilmente ho trovato posti peggiori. Il luogo è totalmente abbandonato e sporco. I letti sono sfondati, la cucina è insalubre, il terreno intorno alla casa è disseminato di oggetti anche pericolosi,c'è un disordine incredibile. La strada per arrivare è piena di crateri e sassi e non percorribile se non hai una jeep. Il proprietario, per quanto sia gentile, non è assolutamente collegato alla realtà e pensa che vada tutto bene. La zona è a 20 minuti di auto dal mare e la posizione della casa non ha alcuna vista. A 5 minuti a piedi c'è il paesino ma non è molto carino

Aberrante a dire poco, affittata per intero con amici la struttura è lasciata andare, cucina consegnata sporca con unto ovunque, camere che potrebbero essere carine se avessero la porta del bagno. Strada privata di collegamento dissestata a dire poco.
Mancanza totale da parte del proprietario Sebastiano, avendo chiesto con urgenza la pulizia della cucina, ha impiegato 3 giorni per farci andare una persona di sua fiducia, che ha tolto il grosso, serviva un miracolo per vederla pulita.
Giardino non curato e mancanza totale di illuminazione notturna esterna.
Da evitare assolutamente, lo dico con il cuore.

Nell'esperienza maturata non molti giorni fa in questa struttura si è passati, nel giro di poche ore, dal lirismo alla satira. Dunque: siamo arrivati in piscina ore 17.00 circa, 2 coppie con 1 neonato. Non abbiamo visto cose che voi umani, come raccontato da precedenti visite riferendosi alla piscina, ma certamente abbiamo beneficiato di un servizio molto alla buona quando abbiamo chiesto del caffè e qualche drink. Presto ci siamo accorti che l'intorno era un ambiente molto disagiato: stanze aperte piene di qualsiasi cosa, doccia della piscina perdente acqua, approssimazione, proprietario factotum vestito da giardino profondamente sudato e accaldato. Avendo prenotato la cena ed avendo 3 ospiti che ci avrebbero raggiunto di li a poco, ci siamo dunque accomodati nella sala da pranzo. Ecco come sono andate le cose: antipasto con salumi e formaggi locali, Ok, nulla da eccepire o quasi. Primo piatto: il proprietario, vestito di bianco, prima di uscire dalla cucina e servirci ha messo in bocca la cucchiaia con cui poi ci ha servito la pasta direttamente dalla pentola. È seguito a questo primo piatto un altro antipasto (?). Gli abbiamo chiesto del pane e lui lo ha preso direttamente e con le mani dal cestino del tavolo di fronte. Alcuni commensali, indignati, hanno smesso di mangiare. Lui non ha ritirato i piatti dal tavolo pur se avvertito della dipartita. Chiusura: ci ha fatto pagare prezzo pieno e troppo alto per quello che abbiamo mangiato e poi, ciliegina sulla torta, ha simulato il non funzionamento della connessione internet (dicendo che da 4 giorni non andava) costringendoci a pagare in contanti e in nero. Non prima però di richiedere, a cauzione, la fotografia di una nostra carta di credito!!!! That's all. Giudicate voi. Del resto con tutte le recensioni negative che ha questo signore c'è sicuramente poco margine. La cosa che mi ha dato più fastidio è che questa persona, così facendo, sta vilipendendo questo territorio meraviglioso. So che il signore, pur se con origini locali, è milanese di fatto. Un consiglio: se ne torni a Milano se è questo ciò che è in grado di offrire. Lei non ha sensibilità, non ha amore, non ha gioia. Lei abusa di un territorio per perseguire in uno stile, in una condotta, che sono oramai obsolete, truculente e oscena ai limiti del peggior cabaret.

Non è mai piacevole fare una recensione negativa, ma questa volta veramente non poso astenermi.
1. Bagno in camera (vedi foto) senza la porta. (Il proprietario, bravissima persona, dice per dare profondità alla camera...)
2. Condizioni igieniche ai limiti della chiusura, colazione tra cani, gatti e con tutti i piatti e tazze scheggiate.
3. Strada di accesso alla struttura praticamente inesistente, qualsiasi auto, tranne un carrarmato, si distruggerà.
4. Nel "parcheggio" un tubo dell'acqua (vedi foto) mezzo seppellito, mi ha fatto inciampare al rientro da una serata.
5. Piscina (vedi foto vera... e non dal sito) con acqua stantia e in pieno stile con il resto del casale.
6. Il prezzo di ben 165,00/notte è la ciliegina sulla torta.

Schwer zu entscheiden wo man anfangen soll. Ich war mit meinen Eltern, meinem Bruder, seiner Freundin und meinem Freund dort. Wir hatten geplant 12 Nächte dort zu bleiben (vorab schonmal: es wurden 2). Mein Enthusiasmus hielt ca. 24 Stunden an, während der meiner Begleiter nach guten 2 Minuten im Keim erstickt wurde. Apropos Keime: der schwarz Schimmel in unserem Badezimmer trug dazu erheblich bei. Schwarzer als der Schimmel war nur noch der Mauskot aus dem Zimmer meiner Eltern, der nicht vereinzelnd vorkam sondern im Massen. Auch legten Ratten ihren Kot dazu, der aber nach Aussage des Vermieters „Eichhörnchen Kot“ sei, der aus der Decke fallen solle. Mehr Mauskot in dem Zimmer als Sand am Meer, das übrigens unerreichbar scheint da man durch die Wildnis fahren muss und an Klippen entlang kommt um nach san Fantino zugegangen. Eigentlich müsste man aussteigen und sein Klettergeschier anziehen. Einmal angekommen ernüchtert der erste Eindruck. Der Pool ist dreckig und schäbig. Die sogenannte „Einfahrt“ ist nicht fertig und bildet ein Hindernis für alle Gäste über 30. neben dem Mauskot und dem Schimmel lagen in den Zimmern in jedem Eck tote Motten, Fliegen und Falter. Die Spinnen lebten dafür scheinbar ausschließlich an der Decke, unter dem Bed und hinter den Möbeln. Am ersten Abend wurden wir verköstigt. Das Essen schmeckte nicht schlecht, war aber auch nicht außergewöhnlich. Büffelmozarella mit Tomaten als Vorspeise Spagetti mit Speck, Melone mit Schinken als Hauptgericht und ein gewöhnungsbedürftiger Apfelstrudel als Nachspeise. War okay aber als Vegetarier bin ich mehr oder weniger hungrig ins Bett gegangen und für 150€ Pauschale plus einen selbstgemachten 3€ Wein viel zu teuer. Aber mit abzocke kennt Sebastiano (der Vermieter) sich sehr gut aus. Am zweiten Abend dort kündigten wir ihm an, dass wir ihn am nächsten morgen verlassen werden. Nachdem er versuchte den Mausdreck durch das Angebot ein neues Zimmer zu beziehen wieder wett zu machen, bot ihm mein Vater an, ihm 900€ zu geben. Das reichte ihm nicht. Hier eine schnelle Rechnung (3750€ für 12 Nächte= 312,5€ die Nacht =104,16€ pro Zimmer pro Nacht. Das währen also für 2 Nächte 625€ ) die 625€ noch plus 150€ Pauschale für das Essen entsprechen 775€. Wenn der Wein nicht 125€ gekostet hat, verstehe ich die Empörung des Vermieters nicht. Im Endeffekt mussten wir 1300€ bezahlen, denn er berechnete uns 3 Nächte (angeblich aus Kulanz) zu einem unverschämt hohen Preis. Wenn jetzt noch jemand davon überzeugt sein sollte dort hin zugehen, darf das vor Schweiß und Asche tropfende Kinn des Mannes beim Kochen nicht all zu ernst nehmen. Auch muss man versuchen die kleine Katze voller Flöhe auf dem Tisch oder den Hundekot in der Einfahrt zu ignorieren. Ach ja wer frische Decken, Kissen, Matratzen, Vorhänge oder Handtücher will, sollte seine eigenen mitbringen.

Pessima..la struttura sarebbe anche bella ma non c'è manutenzione, ne igiene la strada dissestata...non ci tornerò piu
