Such an interesting and well preserved site! Spent about 2 hrs here one morning before our flight and wished we had more time to explore the ruins. We rode on the cart to get to the far end to start for an extra fee, which really expedited our exploration time and was well worth it.

Incredible. Needs more than one day. Lots of mosaics are covered this time of year, (March) unfortunately, but many are still available to view. Just wonderful. PS toilets at the cafe were disgusting. So be aware. Hand sanitizer and tissues are a must.

Ostia Antica is one of my favourite places in the world. Not only are the monuments breathtaking, but the trees make it an excellent place for an archaeological walk. The theatre is not so large, but imposing, especially its brick-covered exterior.

Ostia antica is quite amazing, not as big as Pompeii and without the drama but this city needs 4 or 5 hours to walk round. It is pleasantly quieter than most Roman sites, has a good car park, reasonable audio guide. Nice cafe and facilities at half way point. A must see if you are anywhere near Rome.

Amazing experience. 40 mins by metro from the city. Less crowded. We spent half a day exploring the huge landmark. Audio guide recommended. You can as well visit the beach near by.

An excellent archeological site, once a full vibrant/active city by the port near by Rome is ruined and abundant now.

This is a kind of nearby place from Rome, may take an hour max to go and transportation is very cheap, one way €1.50 (Metro) is enough to go to this extra ordinary place. People are crazy to go to Pompeii but this is far way from Rome, may take 4 hours around, minimum €80.00 (around) however kind of similar experience you may have by visiting Ostia Antica.

There is a museum inside, very good collection, a must go place, souvenir shop and a good restaurant, bit expensive but good portion and quality food.

Entrance fee to the is site is around €10.00 per person, I think. I loved it, a place to be recommended.

I'm going to be reviewing all of Ostia Antics because there doesn't seem to be one landmark for it on Google Maps. The theatre is but one part of the ancient city, which used to be the port of Rome where sea ships would dock and tranship their goods to barges which would take them up the Tiber to Rome. The ruins are massive in area, I spent 6 hours there, and vary from almost totally destroyed to surprisingly well preserved. Getting there is pretty easy from Rome, the metro stops at Ostia Antica station and only costs €1.50 each way. It gives a good look into what Ancient Roman life was like, plenty of houses where it is easy to imagine people living there. Anyway, I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys wandering ancient ruins

Amazing place. The biggest preserved old Roman city, you can easily spend half a day here. Impressive. The old harbor of Rome provides everything from regular houses to a big theater. Take your time to walk on the main road that enters the complex. There is a restaurant with good food where you can rest because there is a lot of walking! If you go in the summer take your hat and use sunscreen.

Amazing example of real roman culture and architecture without crowd of tourists from around the world. I impressed and liked it so much. Only few school groups and European and USA tourists it is a guaranty of fine time spending in this archeological site.

Ostia Antica was a beautiful and memorable stop on my trip. It was fun to see what a port city was like, and see the architecture and art there. Unfortunately some mosaics were covered for winter preservation, but it was still a good time. So much to see and such a large ancient city. The history is fascinating!

Great for a quick 1-day get away from the busy Roman sites filled with tourist ( you will need a whole day for this. There is a lot to explore) The train ride and admition was included on the 72 hrs RomePass so it costs us nothing to get there. For some reason tourists are not rushing to Ostia Antica, but the locals are. The day we visited, I probably saw (through out the day) 20-30 tourists and 4 or 5 middle school groups (about 15-20) of students. You may want to bring snacks and water because, like us, there was just a lot to explore and no time to go looking for food.

Ostia Antica is a fantastic site well worth a visit. Easy (and very cheap) to get there by train from Rome.

Fantastic breath of fresh air compared to the usual tourist trail. Rome's old harbour city of Ostia Antica, abandoned and forgotten for hundreds of years. There are many well-preserved streets and buildings, including shops and what can only be described as a Roman pub. It gives you a real insight into how normal daily life might have looked at the height of Rome's power - normal people, just like you, doing jobs you'd recognise today.

A must see and you can go by metro. Just get out at Ostia Antica. And careful google maps tells you to get out of the station to get your connection to the Ostia line but the connection is inside the station. The place is much bigger than Pompei so wesr good shoes! Take a big bottle of water. There are fountains but not enough and I couldn't find the cafe and I wasn't the only one. Luckily lots of shady places to rest. The visit will last 3 good hours in my opinion.

About Ostia Antica
Archaeological site in Italy

Ostia Antica was an ancient Roman city and the port of Rome located at the mouth of the Tiber. It is near modern Ostia, 25 kilometres southwest of Rome. Due to silting and the invasion of sand, the site now lies 3 km from the sea. The name Ostia derives from Latin os 'mouth'. source
