City Guard Sanframondi

Very little has been shared about this little borgo built into the mountainside about an hour east of Napoli. It is without question one of the most fascinating places I've been in Italy. Guardia embraces fiercely the old Italian lifestyle and relish in its glory. The shops still close between 1 - 4 PM each day and half the day on Sundays. The people are extremely friendly and welcoming and never shy away from meeting and talking to you, even if your Italian is weak or non-existent.

The most wonderful thing about Guardia is the pride these citizens have in Guardia Sanframondi. They may not seem to have much in the way of material possessions, but they are very proud of what they have. Every doorstep is swept and mopped clean, and don't try to judge a book by its cover here. Behind these 300+ year old doors you can find some amazingly modern homes with views of the vineyards and olive orchards below that will take your breath away.

The town is fairly self-sufficient. Everything you need is here. Life may be slow, but never boring! There is so much to do and see here, and if you travel just 30 minutes from here you can find yourself in the mountains, surrounded by gorgeous woods, or by a beautiful lake, or driving through stunning landscapes of vineyards and olive orchards, parks with wild growing asparagus, broccoli rabe, wild artichokes and huge, wild rosemary plants everywhere.

Guardia is as peaceful and calm as a yoga retreat and as lively as the local Blues Brothers bar (yes, they have one here!). The food is outstanding. Five star flavors with one star prices. Pastries like you've never tasted before, fresh bread stores and will forever haunt your senses, absolutely the best cheeses in all of Italy are found at the local cheese store on the town square and homemade gelato flourishes every summer.

I hope this town never becomes so popular as to be overrun by tourists, but if you're ever in the neighborhood, please take the time to stop, walk around, eat, get something to take with you and enjoy the magic that is Guardia Sanframondi. I promise you, it will be one of your best experiences ever!

In the simplest of terms, Guardia Sanframondi is the best the Italy can be. Forever Guardia!

Il Municipio di Guardia Sanframondi ospita al piano terra un museo civico interessante con bellissime tele del pittore barocco napoletano Paolo De Matteis. Merita sicuramente una visita. Al momento il museo ospita anche una interessante mostra dello scultore contemporaneo Ernesto Pengue, nativo di Guardia.

Sono stata lì per Vinalia, comune super organizzato, ed efficiente anche super controllato un po’ buia la strada per arrivarci
