Iconic Church in Atri which also one of the designated Holy Doors. It is worth visiting regardless day or night

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 13th century on earlier Roman baths. You can see parts of its history through a glass floor

The rich history is well described on the site of the city of Atri.
The cathedral has 4 large entrances and when I stepped in I was overwhelmed by the enormous space filled with light. The frescoes by Andrea de Litio (1420 – 1495) are a good example of new Italian Renaissance art of painting wrestling away from the Gothic style. It shows very lively pictures of scenes from the new testament. Amazing and full of details.

Atri Cathedral (Italian: Basilica concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Atri) is a Romanesque Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the town of Atri, Province of Teramo, region of Abruzzo, Italy.

It was formerly, from 1251, the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Atri (later Penni-Atri) and has been since 1986 a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Teramo-Atri. It was declared a minor basilica in 1964.

I photographed a destination wedding in the nearby town of Pineto and insisted that we travel to Atri for the couple photos. It did not disappoint. The cathedral is absolutely stunning and the perfect backdrop for wedding photos!

It's an amazing church to visit. It's really beautiful internally. Warto to zwiedzić!!!

Cattedrale di Atri assolutamente da visitare. Finita di costruire nel 1284 è un’opera maestosa realizzata in pietra d’Istria. Prima di visitarla consiglio di leggerne la storia. Gli affreschi nell’interno sono di matrice giottesca realizzati da Luca d’Atri il ‘Maestro di Offida’ e rappresentano le storie di Cristo. Stupenda anche nella sua costituzione architettonica.

meravigliosa cattedrale prebarocca, restaurata da poco, conserva meravogliosi dipinti di epoca medievale...
merita di essere molto più conosciuta e valorizzata...
tra i massimi tesori d'arte d'Abruzzo (anche se qui preferiscono promuovere gli arrosticini..)

Questa cattedrale era un pantheon romano di cui è ancora possibile ammirare i mosaici e le strutture sotterranee. Attualmente è visitabile liberamente. Potete ammirare quadri, affreschi e un soffitto incredibile.
Passate a vederla che merita.

La basilica cattedrale di Atri è il cuore del centro storico in piazza duomo con di fronte il teatro comunale. L’esterno è imponente e l’intero è ricco di affreschi del 1200. Molto particolare il baldacchino con colonne tortili e l’affresco dell’assunzione della vergine Maria nell’abside centrale, che cattura la vista e l’attenzione offrendo buoni spunti per la meditazione.

La maestosità dell'arte che accoglie il visitatore appena arrivati nel centro storico...
