Les murs grecs de la période hellénistique, visible de la route, pourraient paraître anecdotiques. Ils rappellent en réalité l'origine très antique de Regio, presque totalement effacée après le tremblement de terre qui rasa la ville (et celle de Messine) - d'où son côté très moderne. Regio fut bien une cité grecque dominée par Syracuse sous le règne de Denys l'ancien, entre autre. D'où l'antipathie de certaines gens de Regio vis à vis de ceux de Messine ?
