Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso

The most beautiful and breathtaking view. A heavy climb up for 2,5 hours will take you there but of course a car will do the same in 15 minutes from Pella.

Enjoyable drive up to the sanctuary, zig zaggy drive 😁 but fun. Lovely views from up there of lake Orta and a peaceful church to contemplate life. No queues.

We arrived here too late to visit the church but instead we enjoyed the great view.

If you are visiting Lake Orta, this Baroque Church is worth to see, not just with the amazing view of the lake and the alps from the church square but for the church itself, it has 2 lateral altars, the altarpiece represents the " Pieta " and the ceiling is covered with amazing frescoes. There's a parking area at the back, kiosk for a snack, a big park with tables and barbecue tools if you want to have a picnic, kids will love it and adult too. There's a tourist train that will bring you to the town of Pella.

The sanctuary (XVIII century) stands on a huge rocky outcrop of precious white granite that gives name to the complex (Madonna del Sasso > "Madonna of the boulder"). The complex includes the church, with an altar paint by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio, the bell tower and an hermit house. In front of the church you can enjoy a stroll in the fine square. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the breathtaking view over the Orta Lake. The eye reaches Omegna and the pre-Alps in the north, while the Pianura Padana, novara and Malpensa lights can be seen in the south. Do visit on a terse morning, the placid, wild paisage will enchant you. The view is even better at night! Be sure to bring a tripod with you, this is a camera spot!
On the practical side: arriving from Alzo/Pella there are two roads that climb the mountain, one is faster but also really steep, the second one takes longer but it is easier to drive through. Be prepared for scarcely illuminated roads if you visit at night. Near the church you will find a spacious parking lot, a public toilet and restoring spots.
