Osteria del Matto

Authentic delicious local food with a fixed menu. We got some 5-6 dishes to try - all very tasty. Friendly service with a smile.

We stopped here not knowing what to expect. They explained to us that they only have a fixed menu and it's a chef surprise, well, we decided to be adventurous and here we are...
We started with 3 different appetizer plates to share , they came in succession and they were so good we ate them before I even remembered to take a pic, all three of them were really delicious but the sausage grilled with grapes and tomatoes was to die for
We than had two meat dishes , one with chicken and one with ribs , both very tasty. The ribs were cooked to perfection.
If that wasn't enough we got a pasta dish with a regional typical ragù. Once again very good indeed.
After all of that food we got the desserts too, they were a Spoleto typical called crescionda, once again very good!
The service was good and very friendly.
So we highly recommend it especially if you are willing to be surprised by the chef!

“Menu a Sorpesa” is a great concept which transforms a meal into a real experience, and here it was for a very fair and decent price.
We enjoyed all the dishes served. We loved the informal atmosphere as well as the unique, eclectic design. We felt right at home in this family run eating place and want to give special thanks to Filippo for his friendliness and hospitality.
We highly recommend Osteria del Matto at Piazza del Mercato in Spoleto. If you can’t find it there, just ask locals as we did:)

Amazing atmosfere. Great food. We went there for lunch. Expect to pay around 30 Euros for 8 secret small to medium-small courses (you will be full after), a glass of wine and a coffee

Possibly not to everyone's taste, with the surprise menu concept, but I loved it. 25 euros gets you about six different, tasty dishes. Wonderful ambiance and warm, efficient service.

Filippo's resturant has been such a uniqe and wonderful expirience for us. The place is filled with his loving and colorful personality. The menu is original and changing by the season. Everything that was surved was delightful, so delicious and you could just feel the love that was put into every dish.

Had a wonderful dinner here just after Christmas. We enjoyed a beautiful walk around Spoleto and then dinner here right in the center of town. The food was delicious, hearty and authentic, just like being invited into an Umbrian home, and Filippo is something between a manager, waiter and stand up comedian :) Highly recommend, excellent dinner, great atmosphere and really memorable evening.

We had a fantastic local experience at the Osteria del matto. 8 course surprise meal, lovely chats with your table neighbour, traditional songs and simply a great Spoletan vibes. Surrounded by the most diverse peak summer movida. Do not miss it, if you have something special to celebrate in Spoleto.Pure joy..😊

We can highly recommend eating here. There is so much to love about this place: the decoration, the food and the owners.

We kind of got there by accident after we planned on eating somewhere else at first, but we were more than happy, that we got to be their guests. The home-cooked meals are something you don’t find in every restaurant and so is the friendly atmosphere. It was a unique experience and one of our favourite evenings of our trip to Italy!

This is a wonderful family restaurant. Great host and delicious food cooked by his mother and wife in the kitchen, while his father has lunch next to you. Local ingredients from Umbria and with about 12 small courses for 25 euros it cannot be beat. I remember a wonderful salami as well.
No menu, only local and fresh ingredients selected daily. You just sit down and food starts coming. The flavors are truly fantastic.
It will be a long meal but a very memorable one.

A fantastic culinary experience with fresh, farm to table ingredients straight from the Umbrian countryside, and everything included at an unbelievable price. If you know you will be in Spoleto at dinner time, do yourself a favor, and book a table at Filippo's ristorante. You will not be disappointed. The food and service are AMAZING!!!!!

It’s special with a set menu. Not expensive and changing in quality in what you get. I suppose nothing satisfies completely what you choose yourself but in general my menu was a big to greasy to my taste. It all started with a wonderful soft cheese with a gebed dark red house wine. Then the procioto melons was not a lot but fietst quality. The pasta was fettuccini with an orange peppery sauce, nice but not super. And then the temp, mixed carne. Too greasy pork cutlets with a lot of fat and stripes of delicate pork, juicy but not easy to cut out with a normal dinner knives. There was also spork sausage, nice scented but greasy. Price € 26,-. Not bad but it went all past my taste.
Watch out the Osteria is half way in the square through a narrow gate which is between large tourist terraces, not easy to find.

Amazing neat little Osteria right in the city centre of this beautiful town. We stopped for lunch on a friday on our way to Rome and it was very worth the stop. The menu is set, so you don't have to worry about choosing what's best. Highlights were crostini with lardo and juniper, farro (hulled wheat) with asparagus, onions and local prosciutto in big chunks, and all the meats. 12 dishes plus wine and water for 25 € is a bargain. Absolutely worth checking out.

Osteria del Matto is a Spoleto institution...the hospitality of Filipo and his mother is legendary. Be prepared for a very special experience - the restaurant is tiny with just a few tables, so expect to share a table if you are not in a group - normal etiquette in Italy...
A menu does not exist, they simply prepare dishes from produce which is best on the day. Many courses will be presented and the food matched with good local wines.
Make sure you don't leave before the pasta course! Even though you may think you cannot eat another thing... Dining at Il Matto is like a private party with Filipo in his element as the gregarious host. If you dine in the evening, you will be expected to stay until the end, when he breaks out the digestivi and starts spinning his favorite discs - then the dancing begins !

You can go to many fantastic restaurants in Umbria. In fact it’s hard to find a bad one.
But you cannot beat a pris fix menu from a real Italian nonna (grandma) right out of her kitchen. Cozy and friendly family run restaurant. Local food and she cooks until you’ve had enough. Momma Mia!

Easy place with a fixed menu: only daily and fresh food so really tasty. The house wine is quite good so go for it.
