Vela - Food and Drink Café

Delicious savoury and sweet dishes. A perfect stop on a bike ride.
Not cheap but still can recommend.

Lovely little cafe, with flatbreads, cannoli and pastries/cakes. Can sit outside and listen to the music, enjoy a coffee. Staff are friendly.

My wife and I just finished a week-long cycling tour of southern Sicily. On our last day we entered Fontane Bianche, ten miles south of Siracusa, and found a spot on top of a metal grate to lock our bikes. We had planned to watch a local skate boarding event and to have a cup of coffee. Unfortunately, after locking our bikes, my wife dropped the keys and they fell into the grate.
We went in search of a magnet and string or a fishing line and hook but were unsuccessful. As a last resort, I went into Vela hoping that they might have something to help retrieve keys. I approached the owner and despite knowing no Italian, I was able to explain the situation. He called to a table of customers to join him. They crossed the street together and with difficulty, were able to lift the heavy grate. The owner did this despite having to deal with a large Saturday lunch crowd.
It was a stressful situation. Yet, he helped with a satisfying nod and a welcoming handshake.
When we returned to the restaurant, I asked him to buy a round of drinks for the others, which he did. Unfortunately, in the craziness, I forgot to pay. Ugg.
I remembered later in the day and called him. He generously declined my offer of an electronic payment saying that instead, I should buy him a drink the next time I was in Sicily. Amazing!
I would ask that if you are ever in Siracusa, please stop by Vela, say hi to the owner and buy a drink and something to eat. The place is bright and cheery and has lots of outdoor tables. You would enjoy it and would be doing a favor for a great guy.

Super friendly and multilingual staff! Amazing panini’s and sweet desserts. Fresh cold water and clean toilets. A perfect pitstop during our roadtrip.

Awesome welcome, fresh food, correct sea-side prices, good local vibe. Today: Amazing salad with freshly grilled veggies. People looking for haute cuisine: hello, it’s an effing BAR. And a very good one at that. Stop every time I am in the area, never disappointed.
