Isshin-ji

A Buddhist temple and cemetery. We walked from the JR station and followed the signs to the Osaka Museum of Fine Arts (currently closed for renovations) and entered thru the side gate.

It’s an active temple and followers pay their respect by burning candles and incense sticks. We paid our respects too. We did not enter into the main hall which is for the followers.

There is no entrance fee.

Isshin-ji, located in Osaka, Japan, is a Buddhist temple with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1185. Initially established as a Shingon sect temple, it later adopted Jodo Shinshu teachings, becoming a significant Pure Land Buddhism center. The temple underwent several relocations due to wars and fires before settling in its current location in 1868. Isshin-ji gained prominence in the 20th century under the leadership of Abbot Yamada Koun. Known for its unconventional and socially engaged approach to Buddhism, the temple actively addresses contemporary issues. Notable features include a massive wooden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and a collection of memorial tablets for deceased pets. Isshin-ji continues to be a spiritual and cultural hub, welcoming visitors seeking a unique blend of tradition and modernity.

I found this temple on my way to Shitennoji temple and I am so glad I stopped by. It’s a rather small but beautiful temple. I recommend visiting this place.

Normally I'd give the temple four stars because I was there for about 15 minutes, but it had the most beautiful cherry blossoms in the temple, and that was what I came to Japan for! So automatic 5 stars from me!

There were people here praying, burning incense (fairly potent fragrance) around the area, and I believe tablets which were for loved ones who passed on. The culture preservation is insane and I appreciated how respectful everyone was.

It was quite busy when I was there and still very clean. The goshuin was beautifully calligraphed.
The Buddha's are made from cremated remains. Beautiful and a bit unnerving!

Nice and calm temple as concept “the common people’s temple

Beautiful Buddhist temple that lies hidden on a hill. They provide a dozen places for visitors to sit down and appreciate the serenity.

A nice temple with a cemetery in a garden surrounding, giving it a peaceful and grateful feeling.

Another site rich in history and culture. There is no admission cost to enter and it is on the way to Tennoji Park so it is a very nice stop by or just destination in general. I really enjoyed the temples and koi pond areas. Stop by and offer a prayer for another or pray for oneself, take in the sights, sounds, the smell of the incense. Very tranquil place.

Beautiful temple, with a proud and serious history. The Temple itself is interesting, well kept and has a serene atmosphere, if you go early and beat the crowds. For people getting Goshuin (temple stamps) you can get one here, but it did take a minute to find. All and all, the history of this temple makes it a necessary stop for people who enjoy learning or seeing unique temples or landmarks.

A smaller temple than the larger, older nearby temple. However, this one seems more accessible with no rules regarding photography. The cemetary is not to be missed with many ancient headstones.

One needs to make a reservation for the main temple.

Nice place, i made it a brief stop since there's a cemetery attached and it looked like people were there to pay their respects.

Very impressive management & care for the people who passed away and their families.

Just imagine that this temple's god staties a made of ashes of people. One statue made about from the ashes of 150.000 people. You cannot only pray, but see how monks reading their tantras and other so many great stuffs!

Beautiful place with a koi pond! Constantly smells of burning incense. Would recommend visiting as there are quite a few unique sights!
