Basilica of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary, Aglona

Growing up, I often saw groups trekking through our village towards Aglona, a journey of over 180km. While unfamiliar with the pilgrimage, I’ve heard tales of miraculous healing.
My first visit at 16, during a mass, showed me a ground filled with people and glowing candles. The church’s beauty was undeniable, yet it was nearly impossible to enter. On a recent visit, we were lucky to join a group tour inside the church. I recommend checking for this option, as it’s insightful. The interior boasts stunning gold paintings, icons, vases, and intricate carvings. Don’t miss the nearby holy lake - come with empty bottles to collect the sacred water. While we missed the shop, we filled our empty bottles and flask with valuable water.

Very holistic church, peaceful and calm. It has a huge area around and the church as such is very white and love the feel. There is a avotu (blessed spring water) you can drink. You need atleast two to three house there. I loved it.

Beautiful large church in a small town setting...

Beautiful place, you can fill up your bottles with local church spring water. Water tastes really good, it is kind a sweet, we even went back for more, inside we saw a lot of people waliking with dogs as well and there is a wc for 25c, which you can leave if you have to maintain wc. Main church building is beautiful and very modest.

this is just perfect place. Silence, beautiful nature, beautiful lake and much more. This is also biggest church in Latvia.

Majestic church in white, what a great and impressive view in a large space and surrounded by lakes. Aglona is undiscovered town with so much to be seen and discovered. A monument of the first and the single king of Lithuania Mindaugas and his wife queen Morta was open near the basilica.

Wow, wow, wow. You really can't expect to see that amazing and incredible church in this city. Please go there, it absolutely nice.

Holy place, make sure you wear appropriate clothing and don't go inside the cathedral in flip flops. Plenty of parking space, especially weekdays. Toilet available. Take some bottles if you want to get some water from holy stream.

My wife and I traveled around all Latvia for 4 days and Basilica of the Assumption in Aglona was one of our favourite architectural masterpieces, that we have found in Latvia so far. Latvia is a beautiful country and all Latvians are our brothers. :)

P.S. there are quite a few lakes around the town. Sommer is a perfect time to take a swim in one of them. :)

Very interesting Church. Good for taking pictures.

Basilica was lovely however at the little shop.could do with a warning that can't pay with cards and toilets could do with an update.

Wonderful basilica, from both inside and outside! Entrance is free and you can roam around in the park and around the lake.

Beautiful architecture, you may buy souvenirs in the building nearby.
