Nepal's Fishtail Mountain, or Machapuchare, is a mesmerizing spectacle in the Annapurna Himalayan range. Revered not only for its stunning beauty but also for its spiritual significance, this mountain has remained untouched, its summit off-limits to climbers out of respect for local beliefs. This is my personal best Himalayan mountain besides Mt. Amadabalam.

Standing at an elevation of 6,993 meters, Machapuchare's distinctive double-peaked summit creates a silhouette that resembles a fishtail, hence its colloquial name. The mountain is a prominent landmark along the Annapurna Circuit, captivating trekkers with its majestic allure.

The Annapurna Sanctuary trek offers a front-row seat to the splendor of Fishtail Mountain. As you traverse through lush rhododendron forests, quaint villages, and terraced fields, the sight of Machapuchare becomes increasingly captivating. Local folklore weaves tales around the mountain, adding to its mystique.

The sacred aura surrounding Machapuchare is heightened by the fact that climbing to its summit is strictly prohibited. This preservation effort ensures that the pristine beauty and cultural significance of the mountain remain intact for generations to come.

Whether viewed from the lowlands or experienced up close on a trek, Fishtail Mountain is a testament to the majesty of the Himalayas. It stands not just as a geological marvel but as a symbol of reverence and natural harmony in the heart of Nepal's mountainous landscape.

You can trek all the way to Machhapuchhre Base camp and view the Mt. Fishtail from the northern side and admire it's beauty. An eye pleasing front view resembling the tails of fish can be simply observed just travelling in a bus around 1 hr from the city of Pokhara..

A trekking trail to the base of Mt. Machhapuchhre also known as Mardi himal offers the best view of the mountain. It can be reached within a day or two trekking from Pokhara city.

Maybe the most iconic image of Annapurna mountain ranges is Machhapuchhare (Fish Tail). Although the peak is not as high as the others, it has a stunning shape that will always distract you. You can see the best views of Fish Tail when you are on the way of Mardi Himal trek. Reversely, from Machhapuchhare Base Camp, you'll see this peak from another side that this time it doesn't look like a fish tail :) It is also seen in Pokhara center from a distance when weather is clear.

Machapuchare meaning 'fishtail' in Nepali, is a mountain in the Annapurna Himalayas. Situated at an elevation of about 6,993 meters (22,943 ft.) near the Annapurna Himalayas of North-Central Nepal. Machapuchare is sacred for Hindu religion as it is considered the home of Lord Shiva. We went to Pokhara city during winters in the month of February and had to wake up early to see the sun kissing the mountain. It was a little cloudy day, but believe me, when the sun strike the top of the mountain, the colour of the mountain turning into the golden colour is one of the most wonderful moment of my life. Sharing some blurry pics as I forgot to carry my main camera in the morning.

Machhapuchhare, also known as Fishtail Mountain, is a breathtakingly beautiful peak located in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Its distinctive double-summit and steep, jagged slopes make it one of the most iconic and recognizable mountains in the world. Machhapuchhare's pristine white slopes contrast against the clear blue skies, creating a stunning visual spectacle that leaves visitors in awe. The mountain's beauty is further enhanced by its reflection in nearby lakes and rivers, making it a favorite subject for photographers and a must-see attraction for trekkers and travelers exploring the Annapurna region. However, Machhapuchhare holds religious significance for the local Gurung and Nepali communities, and its summit has never been officially climbed out of respect for their beliefs, adding to the mystique and allure of this majestic peak.

Machhapuchhre Peak is a mountain in the Himalayas. Climbers do not allow to surmount as to preserve its beauty and shape. Elevation of this peak is 6993 m. Starting from the ridge of Annapurna Himalayas, it makes the boundary of Annapurna sanctuary. Sanctuary remains an attractive tourist destination through out the year. Having just at a distance of 25 Km from the Pokhara, it is easily accessible. Owing to its southern position in the Himalayan range, Machhapuchhre Peak gives huge relief in a short horizontal distance. This property of Machhapuchhre makes it a beautiful peak despite the fact that it has low elevation relative to others lying in its vicinity. Its double summit resembles the tail of fish, so it is also called a Fishtail.

Machapuchare, Machhapuchchhre or Machhapuchhre (from Nepali माछापुच्छ्रे , meaning 'fishtail'), is a mountain in the Annapurna Himalayas of north central Nepal. It is revered by the local population as particularly sacred to the god Shiva, and hence is off limits to climbing.

Majestic peak. View from base camp is amazing, it was surrounded by mountains. We spent one night here to rest and enjoy the view before trekked Annapurna base camp.

It often exits one of symbolic mountain in the city or town. For example,Tokyo is Mt.Fuji,Yerevan Mt.Ararat,or Seattle Mt.Rainnier and so forth. Mt.Machhapuchhre that is representative one in Pokhara, and its engrossing point is nobody has ever reached to the top this summit,so sacred and worshipped mountain in Annapurnas.Howsoever, the appearance from the town of Pokhara is too most distinctive among others including Annapurna1.

Located on the Annapurna Mountain Range this majestic mountain has an elevation of 6,993m. Its even related with Lord Shiva so climbing is somehow restricted here.

Absolutely stunning. I think Fishtail was probably the most beautiful peak, although it’s not quite as tall as the others

Great things are done when men and mountains meet; This is not done by jostling in the street.

Rising nearly 7000 metres into the clear blue sky above Nepal’s rugged Annapurna mountain range, Machapuchare is arguably the most untouched place on Earth. Believed to be one of the homes of the Hindu god Shiva, its isolated summit sits alone in the sky – unclimbable and untouched. Officially, Machapuchare has never been summited, making its ethereal heights one of the least-visited places on Earth.

In the late 1950s, a British expedition ventured to within 500 feet of the summit before doing the gentlemanly thing and turning back – having agreed with the king that they would not set foot on the sacred summit. Machapuchare’s peak remained untouched.

Machhapuchhare, also known as Fishtail Mountain, is a prominent mountain in the Annapurna Himalayas of Nepal. Its name, which means “Fish Tail” in English, is derived from its distinctive double-peaked summit resembling a fish’s tail. The mountain is sacred and has never been officially summited, out of respect for local religious beliefs.

Machhapuchhare is a stunning and challenging peak, attracting mountaineers and trekkers alike. The Annapurna Sanctuary trek provides breathtaking views of this majestic mountain.
