At first I was told by my tour guide while exploring other sights that the old Berber hill top village of Takrouna was off limits to tourists. There was a part of the cliff which broke off dropping one or two giant boulders onto part of village below.

The next day I chartered a taxi there from south Hammamet and walked up to the village. On the way up I was greeted by a tour group from Tunis on their way down. At the top a woman walked up to me and welcomed me. She introduced herself as the last Berber family living there year round. She welcomed me into her home, offered me bread, olive oil, and olives.

She said that the village was off limits to the public on weekends and there was an official that turned people away at the bottom. From Monday to Friday she said, anyone can come.

It was a wonderful experience. If you go bring cash as she supports her family by selling hand made goods and textiles. Treats for her kids are also welcome.

You may be greeted by men who pose as guides or try to be befriend you in the hope of tips or to be payed to show you around. We had to be blunt and tell one we prefer to be alone. The other casually walked up along side us as if walking the same way as us. He was also looking for cash. We “stopped to eat” for him to walk past and he didn’t. Instead he came forward with request for money for his kids. We offered him snacks which he gladly accepted looking slightly disappointed and turned around back down the hill.

Historic berber village on outcrop of limestone.

Two families still live in the berber village and both offer tea, olive oil and bread. The women who lives in the house at the top, adjacent to the mosque, also has a poster with some information of the village and some stones and fossils in one of her rooms.

There is parking at the top of the hill but note the road is very steep.

There used to be a museum/cafe at the top but this, alongside the mosque, have been closed due to the risk of rockfall. There is a gift shop open near the top.

Only saw a handful of other tourists in the area.

There are only two families living here now, but the ruins and abandoned portions of the village give you a glimpse of how it used to be. You might get asked for a tip from a random guy who “watched” your car but that’s the only pressure in this place. Views are amazing and it’s worth a detour if in the area and have a vehicle.

Beautiful abandoned Berber village at the top of a hill. Take note that there is a guard and we were lucky to get in. The police say it’s dangerous due to the soil erosion

It's just something different.... it will take not much time but you really need to go up that huge rock village and
take a look on that view, it's maybe the highest village that I ever visited

Un pueblo beréber con mucho encanto. Al inicio del pueblo hay una pequeña tienda con artículos artesanales. Merece la pena las vistas y la arquitectura del pueblo.
