Zhovkva Castle

The Zhovkva Castle occupies the principal square of the town of Zhovkva in Ukraine. It was founded by Polish Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski as his fortified residence. Construction began in 1594 and was mostly completed in 1606.
In the 17th century King John III turned Zholkovsky castle in one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe, making it his summer residence. Of famous guests Palace visited Ivan Mazepa and the emperor Peter I.

Beautiful historical place. 1 day is enough for Zohvkva.

The castle is reminiscent of so much history of Western Ukraine, much of it forgotten and even more erased during the soviet days and WWII. While the exterior of it may some day be restored, the interior is long gone and will never represent the original castle. The castle served as a middle school at one time, and an apartment complex. Sadly, Zhovkva has a lot of its history buried under the ground, more than anyone will ever know about.

The "ideal city" and its castle are very interesting locations!
The castle interior has a couple of curious (albeit small) expositions, all of which are accessible through a token fee. Of particular note is the WWI/interbellum exposition - history buffs will be very satisfied.

What a pity no much money to save the castle and save the history attached to it

The Zhovkva Castle occupies the principal square of the town of Zhovkva in Ukraine. It was founded by Polish Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski as his fortified residence. Construction began in 1594 and was mostly completed in 1606.

The castle had a typically Serlian entrance arch and was encircled by moats (up to 17 meters in width). One wing of the building accommodated the arsenal and stables; another was immediately contiguous to the city wall. In 1606, a garden was laid out next to the hetman's residence. It contained a menagerie with wisents, deers, and chamois. The palatine chapel was consecrated in 1640.

The golden age of the Zolkiew Castle was the late 17th century when it passed through inheritance to Jakub Sobieski and then to his son John III, a native of Zhovkva. It was there that the king celebrated his victory under the walls of Vienna. In the 18th century the castle's facade was decorated with the statues of its owners from the Zolkiewski, Daniłowicz, Sobieski, and Radziwill families.

After the partition of Poland the castle fell into disuse and was auctioned off. During the 19th century the chapel and some other structures were dismantled or rebuilt to accommodate a local school. The castle sustained further damage during the First World War. Some restoration was undertaken just before the Second World War, but much more was required following the end of hostilities.

Admittedly it is not the best castle in the region but the museum in it and the lovely town surrounding it makes it a nice place to spend your day off.

Приємна площа з старими будинка. Гарно дуже восени, вхід в музей 100 грн, половина будівлі на реставрації. Але картини в музеї дуже в гарному стані. Один раз можна відвідати якщо ви поруч.

Жовківський замок був збудований архітектором Павлом Щасливим на замовлення гетьмана Станіслава Жолкевського у 1594-1605 роках. На початку свого існування замок знав родину геньмана Богдана Хмельницького, а в другій половині ХVІІ століття був резиденцією короля Яна ІІІ Собеського, пам'ятає послів і коронованих осіб з усієї Європи.
Замок є найбільшою спорудою Жовкви. Спочатку замок мав досить суворі зовнішні форми. Найбільшого розквіту замок досяг за панування Яна ІІІ Собеського, який 1674 року перетворив замок на багату королівську резиденцію.
В даний час будівля замку частково музеєфікована. Нещодавно після реставрації, для відвідувачів відкрили частину замкового комплексу.

Цена билета стандартная как и для остальных замков , входящих в маршрут "Золотая подкова Львовщины" - 90 грн за взрослого. Есть семейные билеты. На входе проверяют наличие сертификатов вакцинации. Замок включен в программу "Большая реставрация". Сейчас открыта экспозиция кузни на первом этаже угловой башни. На втором и третьем этаже - два зала, посвященных гетманам, истории Жолквы, замка. И отдельное помещение, где выставлены картины и скульптуры. Для знатоков искусства будет интересно.

Замок є найбільшою спорудою Жовкви. Він є пам'яткою епохи ренесансу. Розташований в самому центрі міста. Замок знаходить в стані реконструкції. Гарний, великий, відчутні сліди минулої слави і багатства. Дуже привітні працівники з радістю і великою цікавістю розповідають про замок та інші історичні споруди міста. Раджу також відвідати синагогу. Вона є однією з найбільших синагог в Європі.
