PS: The City of Cedar Rapids is planning to take part of Oak Hill Cemetery to widen Mt. Vernon Road! Don't let it happen Cedar Rapids! They can't re-time the traffic signals?? They can't create redirect routes?? But they can sell Cargill more pristine land to poison. Great job, Mayor and City Council./s More Cargill, less irreplaceable 150 year old cemeteries THAT CONTAIN THE HISTORY OF THE WHOLE AREA.

The caretaker of this public cemetery treats it like it's his private property.
It isn't.
Go visit Oak Hill and tell him to mind his own business.
OakHill is on The National Registry of Historic Places. It is OWNED by the citizens of Cedar Rapids and eastern Iowa.
One cranky old man is trying to stop people from coming there. It's disgraceful how he talks to visitors.
The way it's been managed is awful. It looks derelict. And if you say that, the cranky old man gets defensive and refuses to talk about a different approach to the care of Oakhill.
The board needs to fire Carl, who is rude and aggressive.
OakHill needs a new volunteer board of directors. And a new board of caretakers.I would welcome a response. I will also be attending a meeting of the board of directors to ask questions about the management of Oak Hill.

If you plan on being buried here, don’t do it. I paid them $2700 for the spot my father lays in just for them to mow over personal belongings that I put out there that I’m allowed to have. (Carl said they will mow the big grass areas and weed whack around the stones and belongings). They also tried to say I did not pay for a headstone that I very well did, and had the receipt for. After four months of him going back and forth to his “accountant”, I finally got a refund so I can move on and find something different for my Dad. They are not very nice people to talk to. They put you at the end of the line and make you feel as if you are working for them when you’re trying to find the perfect resting spot for your loved one.

Oak Hill Cemetery looks like a lovely spot for a final rest. As a born-and-raised native of Cedar Rapids, I am (was?) considering Oak Hill Cemetery. I am wondering if the cemetery is still on ongoing affair, however. I don't "do" Facebook, but their page makes it seem like they really need some business. Two of Oak Hill's buildings have been torn down due to lack of maintenance funds. History lost.

A business has hours and takes calls. A gentleman named "Carl", who identifies as the superintendent, doesn't seem interested in taking calls at all. I've left three voicemails. I have terminal cancer with a short time left. I've told them this. I'm lacking the energy to chase down a business. I live in Pittsburgh, currently, but with no real ties here. If Cedar Rapids doesn't want me, and that is how Carl is making me feel, I'll be buried here in Da burgh. Pittsburgh takes calls.

It appears the community supports Oak Hill, but should they be doing that? I'm not feeling the "Cedar Rapids" from Carl and Oak Hill Cemetery.
