Married there 44 years ago. Went to Golf and Sports raffle last night. Food room was small and so loud you couldn't hear any announced winners. Had to get up and wade thru a crowded room and food line to see winners on a board. If you wanted to know winners of 20 big prizes you had to go to gymnasium room and see the white board there. Advertised gambling games, there were 2. Alot of strip tickets for cash and prizes though. Food was hot dogs, BBQ ham, and pepperoni rolls. Although good not what other raffles have offered. Expected better. Pop ice chests were not kept full of selections. Ran behind all night. Did have coke pepsi and Dr pepper products. Give them an A for selection. Fire Marshall may have taken issue with number of people in small rooms. I don't like when people running for office come wearing their buttons and tee shirts. Not a political rally. Overall had a good time because we sat with friends and visited while buying tickets and chances.

I was born in Erie. We had to move to the deep south/Baptist country when I was 12. I attended mass, completed sacraments and was as devoted as a kid can be.

I have to say that it was all due to Reverend Monsignor James E. Sperry.

His teachings were not only in line with our faith, but our science as well. More of a St. Augustine's approach to scripture. An approach that too many Christians have been ignoring for too long.

When I was about to be baptized(1970's), my father was instructed to slip the priest some extra cash. My father did not like that, but everyone in the family who had gone through the process insisted, "This is just how it is done." So my father, reluctant, but wanting the best for his child, offered Father Sperry some cash. Father Sperry responded, "Please don't insult me." While my father was not a very religious man, at that moment he became one.

Once, when I was young and had just learned of the birds and the bees; Father Sperry was teaching Genesis. I, a 9 year old at CCD on a Wednesday after school, when the non-catholic kids were playing outside of the window on a clear spring day blurted out, "I'm sorry Father Sperry, but I can't believe this stuff anymore. If Adam & Eve were the first people, that means we are all inbred!"
Instead of shutting me down like so many Christians who close their minds to any science/philosophy that is not expressly laid out in the version of the bible they were raised with, he calmly said, in front of the entire CCD class, "They're all fairy tales before the book of David, Kevin." He went on in more detail, and I do not remember the words, but I do remember pulling my faith in closer at that moment.

Reverend Monsignor James E. Sperry was a great man of faith & philosophy.

I truly hope his spirit and teachings carry on at Our Lady of Mercy.
Our country need to understand that reason is not a challenge to faith, it only strengthens our faith.

A beautiful place for a wedding! The church is tastefully decorated, well-lit, and modern. Brandon and Brian provided our wedding music, and they did a wonderful job!

Burying the dead is the only one of the Corporal Works of Mercy not named in the parable of the sheep and the goats – "When I was hungry you gave me food. . . .” It comes from the book of Tobit: “If I saw any of my nation dead, or cast around the walls of Nineveh, I buried him” (Tobit 1:17). “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:36–55
