This small hill in Rose Hill Cemetery has become a mass burial site and place of recognition. About one hundred bodies of soldiers that died in the Meridien Confederate hospital were reinterred here in 1885. The men were originally buried in other cemetery(s) at the times of their deaths. A large bronze plaque list many of the names and other information that was available.

While driving out of the Rose Hill Cemetery to see the grave of the Gypsy Queen; we noticed a monument atop a small hill, or mound. Getting closer we saw that it was a Confederate monument and was on top of a mass grave. There is an abandoned old high school right outside the cemetery and it appears that was the site of a military hospital during the war. When they tore down the old hospital to build the now defunct school, they relocated the remains of the soldiers to a mass grave and put a mound over them in the adjacent graveyard. This was back in the late 1800s.
There are other memorials to soldiers and one to Charles Read, a Confederate whose raider racked up a very successful number of ships during the war. He is buried near the mound and was a native of the area.
