Kayak Shelter Island

Amazing experience working with Kayak SI. Great communication from start to finish. We departed 1.5 hours before low tide on our 4 hour trip. Some suggestions: make sure to get to the end at buoy#s 12 & 13, pack some snacks/lunch and you can stop to break and eat at buoy#9, Taylor's Island. It was a truly magical day.

Went for a paddle on Thursday morning. The staff member that got us set up was extremely friendly and helpful. He gave us a great overview of where we should kayak (Taylor's Island is a must!) and gave us a great recommendation for food on Shelter Island once we returned.

Absolutely recommend, beautiful location, nice and clean kayaks, helpful staff.
Better call ahead, will save you some time.

"absolutely worth the trip" We rented two kayaks for two hours and enjoyed the water trail immensely ! The paddle experience was book ended with 5 star treatment from Adam the proprietor from the reservations ahead of time, the confirmation of our rental, the history and explanation of the water way with a bottle of water and energy bar to boot! After our 2 hours Adam was right there to help. Kayak Shelter Island featured quality kayaks and if you want a GREAT day trip to this "quite" island book yourself 2 hours and afterwards enjoy a nice lunch. Looking for something to do on that important third date ? Everyone does the North Fork wineries book a paddle with Adam instead.

Adam is a great guy to rent Kayaks from. Went 2x this weekend. Very professional, respectful and pretty entertaining in his pre launch information lecture. The route is great and spending time on Taylor Island was fun for my out of town friends.

Perfect spot and outfit for kayaking. Adam is friendly and knows the area and wildlife very well. The boats are modern and in good condition (much better than I’ve seen elsewhere on rentals). And, the area provides a perfect sea kayaking adventure. We saw a plethora of fun birds and other wildlife. And, we had fun landing to see the Taylor house. Thank you, Adam.

Jay took us out in a small group and we got a great tour of the local landmarks and terrain as well as wildlife (lots of ospreys, turtles, jellyfish, etc.). Jay was very knowledgeable about the area and its history and local flavor too. The water was calm and easily navigable and the kayaks, paddles, and vests were clean and in good condition. I highly recommend the tour - remember to cover up and use sunscreen as part of the tour is in open bay water away from cover.

I really don't want you to find out how beautiful and lovely this location is and how friendly and helpful the people who run Kayak Shelter Island are. I wanted this all to myself. We first visited during COVID, as nothing was safe to do indoors, and now we keep going back. The trail is pretty easy and manageable for newbies like us. We met Tom during our first visit, and then Adam helped us on our 2nd-4th visit. We usually get a 4 hour double ($70) so we can do some paddling and chill at a few spots along the trail, away from it all before paddling back. You can also book 2 hours ($50 for double) and whole day ($90 for double).
You have to call ahead of time to make your reservation. They take cash and card. They provide life jackets if you don't have your own. The trail is easy for first-timers, too. They give you some simple instructions for a few minutes and send you off to the back trail to practice before heading out. It was very helpful to me.
I would recommend this place. I will sure be going back.

Kayaked multiple times here, always pleasant - especially late and early in the season when hardly anyone else is out

My husband and I had a great time Kayaking today. Adam was an excellent and patient guide. I highly recommend Kayak Shelter Island - it’s a guaranteed seamless and fun experience. It was our first time visiting the island and hope to return.

Jay took our group of 7 for the ultimate kayak experience. Very relaxed, very articulate, he guided our group, including a 10 year old on a beautiful trip around the edge of Coecles Harbor. Our guest said it was the highlight of their visit.

Great and easy rental spot on the island. We took the double kayak to paddle around the area for 2 hrs, Jay gave us some great tips which direction to go to make the best of our time. Would love to be back!

A great operator who knows what he’s doing and where to take you. Shelter Island is a paradise for kayakers and it’s a great family activity. A beautiful way to see nature for all fitness levels, and a great workout as well if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s also a nice thing to do on a cloudy day or even if it’s lightly raining.

Jay was very nice and accomodating. We rented a double kayak for 2 hours and he gave us a map and showed us where to go. We saw osprey, lots of mussels, spider crabs and even a fox!

Adam was super helpful when I booked the reservation and Chris was a great guide on the water for our party of 4. Highly recommend!

We rented kayaks and followed the Nature Conservancy water trail. It was a great way to see the island. Reserving and getting in the water were easy and the staff friendly and helpful.
