We were in the area (staying in Winthrop) in mid June 2024 and rented a couple of (hard tail) mountain bikes for 3 hours for $30 each at this establishment in Mazama. The store personnel were very helpful in recommending rides on the local trails, which are very scenic and in great condition, thanks to Methow Community Trails. We didn't have a way to transport the bikes on our rental car, but didn't need to, since the trails start just outside the store. The adjacent store has great sandwiches too!

Great assortment of Nordic clothes and accessories and friendly folks to help you. Our Cascade Prime Timers group come here every year to ski and I'm always bring some cute hat or ear band back from their store.

There's a bit of everything here for the hiker of general outdoorsy folk. I got a cool decal for my car while my PCT hiker buddies grabbed some trail supplies before their journey. It's probably the closet thing to an REI within 60 miles, so check it out!

Outdoor sporting goods store carrying top notch equipment. Purchased a pair of Oboz hiking boots that are manufactured in Montana that have performed above expectations. Kowledgable and professional staff too can help with rentals or purchase.

Very nice shop but quite pricey. $120 for a 8mm 40m rope is excessive.
I recommend buying your gear before going to the Cascades but if you can’t this is the right place (and only place really) to stop.
Winthrop doesn’t sell any climbing gear, so this is the place. The staff is very helpful too.
No reception out there.

I can't believe I forgot to write a review! The people who work at this shop are awesome! I needed crampons last second for a trip into the north cascades and I live in spokane. I wouldn't make it by closing time so they hid them for me outside to pick up on my way through town after I paid over the phone. Definitely the coolest customer service I think I've gotten in years!

Staff was awesome and help me pick out some new touring skis. They presented options I hadn't considered and I ended up with the best skis I've ever owned. Awesome to have a shop of such high caliber in the valley.

Great outdoor sports shop in the Mazama/Winthrop area. Super helpful/knowledgable staff that can help you buy climbing, hiking, and ski gear year-round. They sell a ton of gear for the above sports (only thing that's a little surprising is they don't sell XC skis/boots themselves, but I assume it's an agreement with the rental place next door or with the Winthrop stores maybe?). Also a bunch of cute outdoors-vibey clothes, guidebooks, maps, accessories, you name it! Love the staff and always have to stop here whenever I come through Mazama.

Being from Colorado, I can confirm these guys have everything you need for your outdoor adventure. If you forgot something, they have it. Stop in and look around.

Leif was very helpful and knowledgeable. He gave my boyfriend and I a lot of information on the product we were looking at. He was also very patient and even stayed open almost a half hour extra and never even mentioned that the shop was now closed until I looked at my phone to check the time. Great customer service.

I live in Seattle but do all of my shopping and ski binding mounts and tunes at this store. Best in the state, hands-down. Imagine if they opened a store in Seattle: it would be like the good ol’ days. Anyway, can’t beat the service or knowledge at Goat’s Beard.

If you're in Mazama for any outdoor activities, you should stop here just to marvel at how a store this size stocks so much in a relatively small space. If you forgot something for an adventure, they probably have it here. Bonus for the bike rental concession!

Yep, the best. We asked for advice for where to xc ski and they gave and gave.... we reciprocated and bought a few items. Then, when we realized the snow was 'sticky' we came back for wax, and they helped again. Then we came back looking for a 'restroom' they had that too!!

This is our go-to store for skiing and climbing gear. CB and Micki have curated a great selection of gear, shoes, and clothes.

High-end, High-quality gear for both the seasoned and curious mountaineer.

fun fact: 'mazama' is actually a genus of brocket deer, found in the Yucatán Peninsula, Central/South AMERICA.

Apparently, whomever originally named the town thought the name translated to "goat"--which is why infrastructural branding coalesced into the current, colloquial title.

(Want even more irony? Look up the etymology of Yucatán). Both instances are interesting examples of how names are nothing more than evolving and confusingly-confounded linguistic models and tell a person absolutely nothing inherent about the symbols referenced..
