La Marimba Nicaraguan Cuisine

Okay, if you live near here, or are just traveling through this beautiful area, please do yourself a favor and try this place out! You could go to any big city in the U.S. and not find a better Nicaraguan restaurant, and here in the middle of rural Wisconsin, lies this gem. I was shocked to see it show up on my google search of restaurants in the area, as you will find plenty of good taquerias in small towns around this area, I’m sure this is the only Nicaraguan restaurant in a town even close to this small. I got the sampler platter so that I could try some of everything and have leftovers to take home to my wife. Every single thing on the plate was perfect, as was my interesting cacao milk. The place is spotless, which I know is always a concern for people when it comes to small restaurants. I own a restaurant and always visually inspect places when I enter, and this place is clean top to bottom. The food is fresh and delicious, and the portions were very generous for a fair price. Please give them a shot, I am sure you’ll love it!

I rarely rate any place as 5 stars but La Marimba deserves it. Delicious food and great service. Everyone loved it. It’s mild and flavorful. We will be back

Dinner experience was wonderful. The drinks were delicious, all hand made! Fish ceviche was delicious and fresh. Steak was super tender and flavorful. We had 8 people in our group and the food was so good and hot! Everyone loved their meal. Our service was outstanding, they went above and beyond to make our evening special.

First time visit: Amazing food! Drove out from Portage to go to Wildcat Mtn State Park and stopped for lunch. We split the Maduro Con Queso appetizer, Chanko Con Yuca entree, and Pio V dessert. Highly recommended!

Best food around! I accidentally showed up 10 minutes after close, but they insisted on making some food! It was the freshest, tastiest burrito I've had and the sauces were immaculate. Definitely will be back

Second time here and again the food and service was GREAT! Our server and bar tender, Dennis, was super friendly and made it an amazing experiences. Give this place a try, you will not regret it.

The drinks are amazing! The food is incredible! And the staff are incredibly friendly. This was my first time being there, and I felt like I became part of the family. ❤ the chia and tamarind drink is a must-try!

We drove over from the Mauston area after hearing about this restaurant. Everything was amazing. ambiance, cocktails, and of course the food were all extremely good. I can't recommend this restaurant enough nd hope all the locals support it!

We had the lomo (charbroiled pork) and shredded beef, both were delicious. Wisconsinites can appreciate the fried green plantain (tostones) topped with fried cheese.

A very unique restaurant in a strange place. We are from Minneapolis and this is the nearest Nicaraguan restaurant. About a 3.5 hour drive for us. I took my friend from Nicaragua there and he said it was very authentic and similar to the food where he is from. Staff/owners were very friendly. It is a unique place with good food. I hope they get the support of the community and can continue to grow.

The food is excellent! Each dish was meticulously prepared with fresh, high quality ingredients, and the presentation was nothing short of art on a plate. From the first bite to the last, I was taken on a culinary journey that I won't soon forget. Also, I highly recommend stopping by the bar and experiencing the magic of the talented bartender firsthand. The bartender was a true master of their craft.

First time in today I wish I could remember what I ordered but it was delicious. The bar had a great selection of alcohol and a lengthy drink menu and beer selection which is not common for the area. I look forward to going back they have completely remodeled the space and everything was very comfortable, clean, and inviting.

I think this was the best dining experience I’ve ever had in the upper Midwest. Entering the restaurant felt like going through a portal. We shared the platter with some friends and the food was far beyond all expectations. Truly an elevated experience!

Fried Chicken and pork was a little dry, but asked for some hot and medium sauce, made the meal really good!
Dessert and smoothies were very tasty and nice👍🏽

Wow, just wow!!!! How is a restaurant this amazing in the little village of Hillsboro? We came with our whole family and sat down to an experience that took us to Nicaragua -- we got the Caballo Bayo La Marimba, which was a platter big enough for us all to share, loaded with authentic dishes characteristic of Nicaragua. The flavors were amazing! And the juices -- we were able to taste each of their house-made creations, with flavors that ranged from hibiscus to toasted corn. The tacos were out of this world, and we tried one of the authentic cocktails which was made with an amazing aged rum. The people were as incredible as the food -- we had such an engaging server, and by the time we left we felt like we were friends with everyone working in the restaurant -- we'll never forget them all waving as we left. We're super good cooks ourselves, so we have high standards -- and often restaurants leave us feeling sort of, "whatever". But this was an experience on multiple levels -- culinary, social, and experiential. We'll be coming back (we were too full to taste any of the desserts, which we were drooling over) to see our new friends at La Marimba, and to lose ourselves in an experience that you'd never imagine you'd find in small-town Wisconsin. What a gem!!!

Wow, super tasty!! Cacao drink was super rich and delicious. Food was amazing. Buñuelos were sooooo good I could have eaten 3 bowls of them. Spices and flavors were plentiful. Lots of time spent making this food.
