Schafer Hat Works

I commissioned a custom fedora from Mr. Schafer. He measured my head, and designed the hat to the shape of my head. This was my first custom hat, although I own multiple fedoras. I am extremely pleased with the hat and my experience working with Mr. Schafer, and I encourage anyone who is interest in a custom hat to drop in and discuss it with him. This is a masterpiece that I am proud to own - I need more.

Finally got to collect the hat Fred built for me earlier this year- thank (SCREW!!) you, China!- and can say my hat collection is now complete. A BEAUTIFUL, amazingly well crafted charcoal grey Montana peak hat with a 4 1/2" pencil rolled brim and wide ribbon around the crown, Fred's wife's handiwork. Fred nailed it! Exactly what I described to him when he took my measurements and the fit is spot on. If you desire a finest quality beaver felt hat, Fred Schafer is the man. Looking forward to wearing this hat the rest of my life, however long the Good Lord makes it. Thank you, Fred for such a beautiful hat!

OK... Having had about a year's worth of wear and use on this hat... Just terrific. Fred builds top flight quality with top flight beaver. It's a keeper! Now, I need to get him to make me something in silver belly so that I'll have one dark, one light. I'm thinking a Mesa pinch on the new hat....

If you're at all considering having a custom hat made, you owe it to yourself to pay Fred a visit, sit in his neat old barber's chair for him to measure and look at you and talk about what you want, DO IT!!! You won't regret it. You'll have an heirloom hat that your kids will be able to wear and you'll have a piece of great American craftsmanship!

Over two years on now including one in Iraq (almost daily wear) and my Schafer hat is just plain holding up wonderfully. Best hat for the money in my book.

Consider the "unfinished" hat when making your decision.
It leaves the nap a bit longer and gives the hat a rich look

Mr Schafer has made me two hats. Both were extremely well made and custom to my head. I plan on having him make my wife a hat next. If you want a great quality made hat for a decent price, you can't go wrong with Schafer Hat Works.

Very enjoyable place. Mr. Schafer is a treasure of information. Small shop full of great hats. I went in for 1 hat and bought 2. Even if you don't want a hat it's worth stopping in to meet the man.

I have enjoyed my custom hat many years. Fred is a gifted hat maker and the quality is great. Hope to get back there again this spring and get another one!

Condenseding & misogynistic.. I don’t know how anyone can conduct a business in such a way. A small minded business owner, that drives away customers. I can’t believe they’ve managed to stay in business for so long.
