Katagiri has been open since 1907 and is the oldest Japanese grocery store/market in NYC - you can read the history of the store on their website. They have two stores (the other is on E 59th) and neither one is particularly big. The Grand Central store carries almost everything you would need to make Japanese dishes, but the produce section is limited. Somehow, they manage to cram outposts of Omusubi Gonbei and Brooklyn Ramen into the store as well. I’ve never tried the ramen, but the omusubi are made fresh with rice from Hokkaido and are quite good with an interesting assortment of fillings. The fresh fish/seafood and sushi/sashimi takeout is outsourced to Osakana, which is based in the East Village. In addition, they also carry their own range of various take-out bento which are kept warm and priced well.

If you are looking for some good, quick Japanese take-out, Katagiri is a great option in the Grand Central area. The only downside is that there is no seating, but when the weather is nice, you can walk over to Bryant Park and enjoy your meal there. Otherwise, you can always go to the dining concourse at Grand Central.

Came here and grabbed a nice lunch - there was a it of wait at lunch hour. Loads of things to buy for authentic Japanese dishes. Took pics of the sore to see if you can find what you’re looking for on the shelves!

I received one of my favorite sushi rolls from my employer, who has a refined taste in Asian cuisine. My employer read my mind when the sushi was selected for me. The famous Dragon Roll, carefully crafted and seasoned with red caviar, has a unique blend of spicy mayo, avocado, unagi, sushi rice, cucumber, and nori (seaweed), all crafted to perfection. Thank you Katagiri for making this delicious sushi roll!

Katagiri is close to Grand Central Station and offers Japanese grocery items prepared foods like onigiri, bento boxes, takoyaki, and more. a small, clean, organized space—packed with a lot of Japanese items. stopped here recently and picked up some dumplings as a snack and they hit the spot. definitely worth a stop by if you want something sweet or savory. service is fast and friendly.

The grocery could be bigger, but a lot of variety. Japan Snacks, Fresh meats, frozen and ready made foods, But, 2 restaurants and plentiful choices of ready made foods. They have a ramen shop along with the sushi, fried chicken, and desserts.

Step right up and get ready to be transported back to Tokyo, right in the heart of this authentic Japanese grocery store! The bustling atmosphere will make you feel like you've stepped into a lively train station, but fear not, because the rewards are worth it.

We're talking about the freshest sushi, mouth-watering prepared foods, and the tastiest ramen you've ever had. And if you're feeling adventurous, take a stroll down the beautifully packaged aisles of dry and refrigerated foods. But don't worry if you don't speak the language, just whip out your trusty Google Lens translator and you're good to go!

And let's talk about efficiency, shall we? You won't believe your eyes when you witness a 20 person deep line at the register clear in just 6 minutes with speed and precision. It's like watching a well-oiled machine in action.

So, if you want to experience a slice of Japan without leaving your city, this grocery store is where it's at. Don't miss out on the chance to indulge in the finest Japanese cuisine and culture. Hop on the train and come on down, you won't be disappointed!

A co-worker told me about this gem today while I was in the mailroom and I wasted no time walking over. As usual in midtown manhattan when you see a line outside the door of an eatery it’s a good sign.

Although it’s a tight squeeze getting in and out of this grocery store and lunch spot, the line moved quickly with something on the menu for everyone. Quick grab lunch rice balls with either fried oysters, Eel, pork, salmon, or shrimp tempura starting at $3bucks is nothing short of a miracle this side of town. Fresh sushi of every kind, bento boxes, sushi bowls and brown rice for those who prefer that option.

Everything is made fresh and at extremely affordable price points. I’ll be back for sure.

Thanks for the tip Tim🎉

Wide variety of rice balls at the front including spam musubi. Everything seemed reasonably priced. We could see the workers preparing them fresh behind the counter. They were very busy at lunch time. We stopped to buy some tea drinks and also shopped for some snacks. The workers were helpful.

The best part of this Japanese grocery store (combini) is all the Japanese food options. There is a rice ball store, Gonbei, inside this grocery store. Basically anything you can think of....ramen, sushi, karaage bento, grilled salmon bento, grilled chicken, seaweed salad... so much to choose from. Need to be back more often.

Great little store for all your Japanese Grocery needs. The store is quite complete, and their selection is almost exactly what you would find in a similar store in Japan. The staff is friendly and courteous. Even if you don't know too much about Japanese products, it's a great place to just go and experiment with snacks. Also, they have a wide selection of onigiri (rice balls) thst are perfect for a quick snack or a light lunch or dinner.

I love getting lunches here and they now also have sushi fresh from the Osaka fish market. With inflation prices for lunch in most places are insane but here it's actually pretty reasonable. Also great for picking up any small Japanese grocery items you may need.

An absolutely awesome market!! They have very fresh fish, onigiri and bowl options, and a great grocery selection as well. The perfect spot for getting lunch and stocking up on pantry essentials (plus some great snacks)! I can't wait to go back!

Unbeatable location right off Grand Central to snag pre-made Japanese goodies for your train ride. The Omosubi stand in particular was so clutch - I want to go back and buy like 7 more of their spam and sweet tamago omosubi!! They also have a large selection of sushi and rice bowls to go, not to mention the usual japanese grocery store snacks and sundry! Perfect to stock up before a long train ride.

This is an outstanding specialty food market in New York City —and in Lower Manhattan no less! You don’t even have to schlep far out to find it. It offers what the demanding consumer is looking for : excellent products at excellent prices.
The vast array of very affordable and generously portioned onigiri is of particular note. Wherever I may be in Manhattan —from SoHo to Morningside Heights— it is these onigiri that keep me coming back to Katagiri. They have been the goad of my loyalty to this store. They vary in price from about $2.40 to $3.75 depending on the ingredients. This is an exceptional option for affordable good food in New York.

I am a tourist and was looking forward to visiting this grocer and was walking up and down Lexington Ave looking for a signboard against a brick wall building. That picture actually belongs to another store on 59th St. This store entrance is actually along E 41st St. Hope this helps the next customer who has never been to the store. However I was unable to upload a picture which would have been a better reference.

Great lunch spot. Cheaper than most in the area and lots of variety. Both ready-to-eat options and make-it-yourself options at home. Highly recommend! No seating inside, but public seating down the block near Grand Central.

Cheap Japanese food in the city! I totally enjoyed. We had ramen and sushi and it was really good. We also bought Japanese goodies like chips, rice seasoning, nuts, rice crackers, spam musubi. So ramen and sushi for 2 was $45 while the goodies were $21. Definitely a good price in Manhattan. It seemed crowded during lunch time but the line was quick. We were also able to get a space at the "bar" for two.

I love their rice balls. Affordable and delicious. They sell stuff from Japan and inside there is an area selling ramen too. Rice box and sushi box are available too. Small area of vegetables and groceries to choose from.
