Our first stop in Costa Rica and super memorable! This spot is located conveniently on the route from SJO to La Fortuna and is insanely delicious and affordable. Our server spoke English and set us up with 2 huge, fresh Casados and a Costa Rican jugo. Amazing for $9!! Everything made to order and perfect.

Excellent food, and very beautiful views. They speak English and take credit cards. Plenty of parking.

This small local Costa Rica restaurant is cooking big delicious flaviors with simple ingredients. The fired cheese is a must. There are also some really yummy looking local candies and snacks to buy. Pura Vida y Gracias.

Stopped here for lunch on our drive to Manuel Antonio from La Fortuna and we’re so glad we did. Gorgeous views and homemade fresh food. We ordered two naturals, a casado, and a MASSIVE chicken & cheese empanada. The entire meal was around $11 USD. Definitely worth a stop!

I think I had the best meal of my life so far there, and I was shocked at how cheap it was. Beef in broth, rice, beans, fried plantain and a few other sides, I forget the name of the dish but I was told it's very common in Costa Rica. Meal was probably like $4-6 USD (still figuring out conversions but definitely a great price)

Stop here for incredible, made-to-order empanadas!!! Worth making the trip just for these! The view was lovely, wide selection of treats/snacks to-go, and the bathroom is also super clean and recently remodeled.

The store owner was so kind. He knew we were traveling down the mountain and he offered to make us food for our trip. I will probably never again, in my lifetime, get to Soda Diana again; however, I will always remember his kindness.

On the road to La Fortuna. Should not be missed. Great local fares at super decent prices. Family of 4 ate hearty local Costa Rican dishes for less than $20 usd.

We stopped here because it seemed to be popular with the locals.
Not much English was spoken, however, they did have an English menu to order from.
The food was delicious and very cheap.

This tiny soda sits at the north end of a bunch of sodas a few kilometers north of that ubiquitous tourist dive Mi Rancho, If you want to try typical Costa Rican food that doesn't make you say "so what?", this is the place.
It's a clean, tidy, and above all else cheerful place tended by six or so Ticas who work behind the counter and on the floor. Although it is on the tourist route to Arenal the clientele are almost exclusively Tico and local. I was told about Soda Diana by a gringa friend, but I have never seen another gringo there.
The food is the normal Costa Rican soda fare, but raised to a very high level. My first meal there consisted of gallo pinto, fried sweet plantains, tongue in salsa, and lovely cafe con leche. The bill was 2,200 colones, or a hair over four dollars. The casado with pork chop, many sides, and passion fruit in water ran 3,500 and I could barely finish it. They change up dishes on a daily basis, so you need not eat the same meal twice in a row.
I almost forgot that the tortillas are made fresh on the spot to meet demand, patted out by hand and cooked on a hot pan before your eyes, by a woman who works with incredible efficiency while maintaining a steady banter with her fellow workers and customers alike.
Sadly, this place has meant the almost complete cessation of my cooking at home.
