A naturally stunning area that has many different walks and attractions, we stayed here in our campervan and had the most amazing show from the northern lights in Feb 24. Zero light pollution and comfort facilities in the camp grounds.

Visited on a group trip of Golden Circle with an excellent guide and very informative. This is the very place parliament would gather to make democratic decisions due to there being so many districts (28.) You have an excellent sight from the viewing platform before being able to walk down where the public would listen to their chiefs as all were welcome.

So beautiful! Definitely with a stop! We spent half of a day here, definitely could have spent much more time! Highly recommend you adding it to your itinerary! A little bit crowded, but if you go in the morning you shouldn’t have too much trouble!

Mid-December 2023. The sun barely gets above the horizon and only four hours or so. Clear day, although it was below freezing and had snowed. Clouds in the pictures never reached us, but did drop snow in the higher elevations.
This park is 80m above sea level.

Home of the where the Eurasian & North American plates meet and pull apart 2 Centimeters a year. Hard to tell as this canyon is filled with rock, dirt, snow.

Along the route, many places to stop, view, picnic (in warmer weather or heartier souls).

The lake below was not fully frozen and that is because the water flow continues fast enough to keep it from freezing.

Very large restrooms & ADA accessible.

Visitors center has reception desk, maps, gift shop with hot drinks & snacks.

Excellent trails to explore locally for an hour or so.

It is an extremely beautiful and unusual place. If you are visiting Iceland, it's definitely a worthwhile place to visit. Some of the locations to visit are the hot springs and the geyser. It's truly incredible. Also, the waterfalls are a magnificent sight. I saw them in full flow, but I was told that most of the winter months, they are either partially or completely frozen. The mountains are amazing with great views of the glaciers. Volcanoes, too, can be seen from a distance. It is an excellent place with some of the earth's natural wonders. Incredible! Highly recommended.

Definitely go. My highlight was walking between the tectonic plates. The park is very busy with tourists but that should be expected. If going in winter, you must wear crampons! I saw so many people slip and fall.

Another marvel from nature. Only place in the world where you can walk between the two tectonic plates. The walk between two plates is magnificent.
The world's first parliament is located here and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Very cold but unbelievably wonderful and a real must for all visitors to Iceland. It’s an early start and be aware of the face that in January, the sun does not rise until after 1100 Hrs, that 11 o’clock (AM)

Visited twice, once at night time enjoying the beautiful Northern Lights and a second time as part of a guided tour of the Golden Circle where we were actually able to see how vast and gorgeous the views are. Amazing to see the tectonic plates separation!

I went during a very snowy day and REALLY enjoyed the exhibit. The visitor center was very accessible even during the storm and paying for parking was super easy with kiosks located inside by the restrooms. The exhibit inside the visitor center was very informative, even with some of the information repeating throughout the exhibit it was really interesting. It was also very interactive so I imagine that it would be great to bring kids to. Being a big kid at heart, I loved the interactive displays and the VR features.

Located about 40km east of the Icelandic capital Reykjavik and on the northern shore of Lake Þingvallavatn, the Þingvellir National Park has a special significance for the history of Iceland, but is also located in a geologically interesting area in a rift zone at the border of two tectonic plates. Since many riding trails from all parts of the country converged at this point at the time of the settlement of Iceland, the Althing was held here every year as early as 930, making it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. This national park is extremely interesting both in terms of landscape and geology. It not only offers the opportunity to walk along the Rift Valley zone, but also to enjoy the beautiful landscape and understand the history of Iceland. If you visit Iceland, you shouldn't miss Þingvellir!

Amazing experience. Me and my friend literally climbed on top of the tectonic plates. Once in a lifetime experience you have to do this if you come to Iceland. Without a doubt one of the most incredible things I've ever seen or witnessed.

Amazing views and easy walks from waterfall to the viewpoints. Parked at P2 and paid 750 ISK for a full day of parkering. Plenty of toilets around. Next time around we would park at the very top and walk from there. The cafe is located at the top.

When we visited on a cold Thursday night in March, the park was dark, silent and uninhabited. That's what made it the perfect place for us to try photographing the northern lights. We had a wonderful time. Beautiful nighttime scenery.

Beautiful area to wander while we were touring the Golden Circle. Absolutely insane to be able to walk between two tectonic plates dividing North America and Europe. Amazing views and geothermal activity in all directions. There's even a snorkeling tour!

Beautiful park, with so many great spots. Easy to go to for people who like to walk, but also if you don't want to walk very far (or with a mixed group like we had). We came in december and it was completely snowy, which made the landscapes even more fascinating. The waterfall (oxafoss) was almost completely frozen and beautiful to encounter.

What a thrill to be in the midst of so much history and natural wonder. If standing between the European and North American Continental plates isn't enough of a thrill, contemplating the cultural depth of history history here is breathtaking. We were welcomed by a pair of Icelandic sheep on a cold, snowy October morning. Lots of bus tours to navigate around, but we hiked around longer trails and had the place to ourselves. Visitor center has clean bathrooms and a great gift shop. Highlight of the Golden Circle!

Beautiful area to wander while touring the Golden Circle. Really cool to be able to walk between two tectonic plates dividing North America and Europe. Plenty of amazing views and geothermal activity in all directions. Loved visiting in the fall to see the pop of rich colors and textures along the landscape.

Located where the North American and European continental plates are plugging apart, so there is a lot of unique geology here. Stop at the visitors center on Highway 36 and talk to the park ranger to get suggestions on what to see.
