Very beautiful place. Don't hesitate to take the path on the left that follows the cliffs, very few people are doing it (so it's quiet), and it will give you access to beautiful views.

Cool rock formations! Beautiful beach! Little secret lagoon too! Could see the mountain on the other side and it was snow capped! Amazing!!

Djupalonssandur is another place that has a lot going for it and could really be four different things altogether. First there are trails from the parking lot down through the lava field onto the black pebble beach. Along the trail is another one of those hole in wall sort of formations. The trail down is a bit tricky. You really have to watch where you are going. This would be a great place to spend a few hours just poking about. On a clear day, Snæfellsjökull would be in plain site from the parking lot.

Was a very enjoyable spot with views of the beach from above, and the chance to go down below and walk to the water and see the shipwreck. Best to stay well back as some waves come further out, and we’re quite strong.

There are free bathrooms to use here that don't have sinks to wash your hands but do have hand sanitizers. They are rather clean.

A very informative parking lot as there are signs explaining the park and the different hiking trails.

Located in the Snæfellsjökull National Park, this black pebbled beach is quite different than the familiar sandy beaches of the East Coast in America.

It is hard to believe this area used to be one of the largest fishing areas in the 16th to mid 19th century. Long gone are the fishing boats. But, the area has been preserved by Icelanders and is a popular tourist spot due to its unique beauty.

The ocean looked quite angry the day we visited. But it is these same rough waves that formed the stunning basalt sea stacks in the ocean.

On our 5-minute walk from the parking to the Djúpalónssandur Beach below, we came across what the natives call the “Lifting Stones or the “Dritvik Stone Challenge.” Four boulders ranging from 50lbs to 340lbs were used to determine a man’s strength and their eligibility for work on a fishing crew.

The heavier the stone a man could lift waist high would determine their rank on the boat and their take-home portion of the fish caught. Those who couldn’t lift the 50lb boulder were considered unfit for duty. I guess you can consider it a primitive man’s physical fitness test.

I recommend you go early when visiting. The parking lot can get quite busy. This is a common stop for tour buses.
