This gorge is beautiful and well worth the short steep hike up to it.

Once inside, the trail was covered in snow and ice so we could only go another 15 or so meters without crampons since it was so steep and slippery - we really wish we had brought them so that we could keep exploring.

The easiest and most fun way out is sit down and slide.

Must visit!!! We had a blast ! The climb is a bit challenging, but for young adventurous people shouldn't be problem. And the way down is even more fun, if you are a bit silly like us, instead of boring walking down we chose to slide down and it was the best experience on whole trip, we had so much fun!!

What a beautiful gorge to briefly hike to and enjoy! It’s massive from the parking lot and a steep uphill climb. As you approach, you really see how massive Rauöfeldsgjá Gorge is! With proper hiking boots / waterproof shoes you can go inside the actual gorge! Climb over some wet rocks/shallow water and you come inside the massive gorge. At that point you can enjoy its beauty and turn back or climb up further along the running water.

Considering how many waterfalls exist in Iceland, this gorge is somewhat unique. The crevice is wide enough to easily walk through. One can continue to hike up from where the stream is flowing fairly deep into the gorge.

The hike up has loose gravel and the grade is deceptively steep, so good shoes are needed. To climb in the gorge have to step on rocks and wet stones and again hiking/waterproof shoes are recommended.

Once inside though the place feels surreal and the echo of flowing water and clean moist air almost feels therapeutic.

During the sunset this whole area becomes magical. When we arrive there rain started with hailing and it turned into amazing! Birds at the entrance of canyon giving the place game like vibes. Absolutely stunning and highly recommended if your at the area. I would not go deep in the canyon without equipments but still you can easily get in, up to a point. You can park very close to here so just 3 minutes easy walk to entrance of the canyon

Doesn’t look like much from the road or car park, I almost decided to turn back but I’m glad I didn’t as it was stunning!
A tough-ish scramble up the hill, very slippy in places. At the entrance you have to walk through shallow water so make sure you’re wearing sensible waterproof shoes.
Once inside, it’s a beautiful small cavern. I only walked a short way as it was very icy and looked dangerous in the winter but I loved what I did see.

This is a pretty short hike if you turn back at the waterfall, as we did. There is a rope that you can use to go up the small waterfall and continue if you like, but as otherw have indicated, you need waterproof equipment for that.

Be aware that even in the easy segment, the "trail" is basically walking through the river that runs through the gorge. It's spectacular, but good hiking shoes are definitely recommended, and there's a decent chance you'll get wet.

Spectacular views in all directions.

Awesome Canyon!
I highly recommend bringing rubber boots, as you will be walking through a small river.

If you bring waterproof cloths, you can also climb a small rope at the end of the canyon.
The canyon does not get better afterwards, but its an incredible feeling to climb through a small waterfall.

Lots of dead birds the further you get to the end.

A very fun and unique hike, where you are walking through shallow running water for most of the gorge. You can do it somewhat by balancing on the rocks emerging from the water, but waterproof shoes are definitely recommended. There are also parts where you will need to climb/scale the walls of the gorge to get over taller ledges, but it’s very doable as the walls have many handhold spots.

You need fully waterproof gear to do the whole gorge hike, as you have to climb up a waterfall where you can’t avoid getting drenched. I turned back at this point.

Could not go as deep as I thought we could. Entered the Gorge and walked maybe 15 feet and that was it. Still super cool views on the way up and down and inside.

Really cool stop to climb inside a fissure and see a beautiful small water fall. Hike up the hill is pretty short and easy and it's worth it to climb the river rocks into the fissure and explore a bit. Highly recommend this quick stop.

For those who like a little bit of adventure and a physical challenge, this is well worth a stop. Next to the main road is a free car park at the start of the path which leads you up to the gorge. The path is quite easy but due to the loose stones, watch your step and wear the right shoes. The adventure starts once you enter the gorge. You can go deeper into the gorge by climbing the waterfall so definitely a must to wear waterproof shoes and clothing. The climb can be difficult due to the slippery stones under foot and the limited options to hold onto. But the experience is unique and fun. Give it a go

You walk up a hill and you can see inside the gorge. But you really need to climb inside and work your way up the waterfall that is coming out of the middle of the gorge. There was a seagull sitting in the middle of the waterfalls a little farther up. Then look around and up you can't take the right photo to capture the beauty and uniqueness inside of here. It's narrow so only a few people at a time can be inside

A place that radiates magic. After a short 10 minute inclined walk, one will stumble upon this gorge and step over a few stones in the river to reach a small alcove that is covered in moss and plants. Even on a foggy day, the view still remains spectacular.

Gorgeous gorge with a light hike less than a mile up to the main attraction which did not disappoint. You can travel further up the gorge, until you see the blue rope, fairly easily which makes for an adventurous trip. Light mist from the water so a rain jacket is recommended but not necessary.

We made a random stop here and it was such a lucky hit! A beautiful place, so much fun to climb inside. You don’t need anything waterproof to enjoy it!

I went inside with running shoes. I went really far inside - further than most tourists, but had to stop as there was water in the track. The coolest short experience i had when on Iceland. I was in and out in 30 min.

Amazing Gorge, quiet a difficult climb. Make sure you have waterproof boots!
Don’t drink the water, there are dead birds further up!!

We only went half way I suppose, in the middle there is a difficult climb on a waterfall where you have to use a rope to climb it.
