The University of Peradeniya hosts nine faculties (including the newly added Management faculty), three postgraduate institutes, 10 centres, 73 departments, and teaches about 12,000 students in the fields of Medicine, Agriculture, Arts, Science, Engineering, Dental Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Management and Allied Health Science. It claims to have the largest government endowment by a higher education institution in Sri Lanka, based on its large staff and faculties/departments.

The 83rd Annual General Convocation – 2020 will be held in three sessions on August 30th and 31st at the gymnasium of the University of Peradeniya. This year, 3130 degrees including 343 postgraduate degrees will be conferred under the patronage of the Chancellor, Professor Gerald Pieris, and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor M.D. Lamawansa. At the convocation – 2020, Professor Harischandra Abyegunawardene and Professor C.M. Maddumabandara will be conferred honorary degrees. The convocation-2020 will be held under strict COVID-19 related health guidelines.

Peradeniya Medical School Annual Research Conference 2022 - PeMSARC22 will be held on 30th September 2022 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

The University of Peradeniya is the oldest and largest residential public higher educational institution in Sri Lanka. The University comprises nine (9) faculties; Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Arts, Dental Sciences, Engineering, Management, Medicine, Science, Veterinary Medicine, and Animal Sciences, offering internal bachelor’s degrees and four postgraduate institutes offering degrees leading to masters and doctoral degrees. In addition to offering internal bachelor’s degrees, the university offers external degrees as well. At present, the total number of internal and external undergraduate students is 12,756 and 10,400 respectively. Further, 7,500 local and foreign postgraduate students are studied in the university.

The University of Peradeniya located 110km from Colombo was established in Colombo on 1st July 1942,  moved to Peradeniya in 1952. The history of its evolution as the oldest and the largest university in the country passed through the following stages: University of Ceylon (1942 - 1952), University of Ceylon, Peradeniya (1952 - 1972), University of Sri Lanka, Peradeniya Campus (1972 -1978), University of Peradeniya (Since1978).
