Spent a very fun morning exploring here. The entire thing is self service, from buying the tickets at the automated machine to the self guided walking tour. Lots of space to spread out and explore, and various ways around. Super interesting history and we loved the "depictions" of what the castle would have looked like during its heyday. Definitely recommend. Advisory: while there was an elevator to get to the entrance level, the walking paths didn't seem very wheelchair or stroller friendly.

Around a 40 minute wait for the next tour, no issues as pleasant waiting lounge and toilets. The tour was very good and they provide an A4 piece of paper with English details in a numbered layout as the guides are spoken in Dutch. Once the caves are done it’s then a very nice walk around the castle ruins with great views

It was raining when we decided to go there on a weekend, but it was still so nice to walk around the ruins that we decided to stay. You could take a lift up one of two floors if you want to avoid stairs. There's a restaurant adjacent also and you can enter the ruins through the restaurant. There's a handy app, if you're planning to visit it- download the app over wi-fi in advance so you can make the most of your visit (and can avoid mobile data charges). It took us about an hour to walk around and explore, although you could take longer to truly enjoy your visit.

Great free stop with the Museumkaart. Very glad they had an elevator to get up the first hill, and the rest wasn't too bad. Great views of the city and lots of fun seeing the ruins of such an amazing old building. Was also fun to see all the old inscriptions in the stone from prior visitors 😅 Was just missing a souvenir shop 🤔

Great indoor and outdoor experience. Rooftop cafe is ideal for snacks and coffee. 360 degree panoramic view is breathtaking. Underground parking is available nearby.

Recommended for tourists.

Combining a visit with a trip to Maastricht is perfect. In addition to the ruins themselves, you get a great view of the surrounding area.

Nice place to visit (and to get a view of Valkenburg from the top) but can be pricey for those without a museumkaart. We liked that the information board has artist impressions of what each section of the castle would have looked like. If reading information boards are not your thing, you can scan the QR code which will direct you to their website where you can play the audio guide (remember to bring your earphones along or you can purchase one from them for a few Euros)

Amazing Christmas market in the caves. Open from mid November until 23.12. every year. Good selection of Christmas and other goods and products at reasonable prices. Entry price to the cave in 2018 was 7 euro per adult. Toilets and refreshments available.

Extremely beautiful. The ruins are tremendous. Possible to combine the cave with the ruins. Its kinda pricy for both, but worth it.
Good infographs available even a few maquettes. Excellent view.
Keep climbing from street level till your in the knights hall.
Shame all the stones are carved by people.
There are benches to sit for a while once inside.

I went here on the weekend. We will go to the cave in a group with a guide who will lead us the whole way. It's a very interesting explanation. The tour is quite long and in the end of the tour, we will be free to see the ruined castle. It has a nice view up there to see the whole Valkenburg. A very nice experience

The rich history of the Middle Ages lives again with a visit to the Castle Ruins in Valkenburg aan de Geul, and its history dating back to the 11th century! Towers jut skyward from the ruins of the once so imposing castle, the Netherlands’ only hilltop castle, looking out over the little fortress town below.

I simply LOVED these castle ruins! It is so crazy and amazing to see something that once was a home. Castles are a lovely part of the history, I think. It's a shame that only ruins have left.

Beautiful castle ruins on top of a hill with a network of caves beneath it. The ruins have a great view on the village of Valkenburg and has a restaurant at the entrance on top. The ruins are also surprisingly well accessible for strollers and wheelchairs and therefore perfect for a visit with small children or disabled people.

We don't have lots of history in the Netherlands comparing with other countries, but this is one breathtaking castle! My kids loved walking there and we enjoyed the beautiful view of the city.
